When It Rains, It Pours

May 22nd, 2008
By

At least it did, literally, as practice was wrapping up yesterday. First, it began to drizzle. Two seconds later it was pouring.

"Eh, hurry up and take kea da equipment! You got two minutes or you goin' run 50 hills!"

A look of panic glared back at me but as the players got wet I just began to laugh as I saw them standing there soaked to their birthday suits. When it comes to rain, isn't it strange that your mind turns into a fight or flight mode? You either going to run for cover or succomb to nature. Funny thing rain, we all like it and hate it at the same time yeah?

Wassap Wit Dat?

The players actually loosened up when the rain came, laughing and getting soaked running around in slop (parents were real happy  ) which got me thinking about da hana-batta days.

One time my friends and I went mountain biking - we just da weekend warrior types go once in a blue moon - but my not so coordinated friend decides he wanted to try and go up a manini two foot bank in the slop. Let's just say he didn't need to go to a spa for a mud bath, he got one free. My friends and I never let him forget it...and that was a little over ten years ago!

We nevah kea that it was muddy or rainy, we just let loose. For some reason, it was like that too for the players yesterday. Sometimes the rain does bring out the best - or the beast - depends how you feeling eh?

So what's your rainy day story? Everybody has got to have at least one! Since everybody likes food too, what's your favorite rainy day grinds?

Anybody do the mud slide? No, not da drink. I don't know where it is but I've always seen pictures of people riding ti leaves all nasty and muddy...but always with a smile on their face.

Anyone run around in the rain lately...and enjoy it?

back in '02 i was in the thick of planning my wedding. it was 3 weeks away...i still never get back alot of my RSVPs, my bridal party was annoying me, my husband-to-be was annoying me, i had centerpieces, and favors, and decorations, and bridal gifts, and i was turning into what i now know as a "bridezilla" lol!! one afternoon, it started to rain and then pour...i walked out and a couple of drops hit me...then my husband walks out and asks, "what are you doing?" i looked him straight in the eye and said, "i'm gonna play in the rain!" it was one of the best afternoons ever!! my niece and nephew had left their razor scooters at our place and we rode around splashing each other. it was so chill and relaxing...one of my neighbors came out and yelled at me, "what are you doing? you guys are going to be sick on your wedding day!" we didn't get sick and i got a MUCH NEEDED stress break!! *good times*

  2. Coconut Willy:

Growing up in Hilo, get planny chances to play in the rain. We used to play football in the mud. The more wet and muddy the better. We also used to skim board at the Muni golf course.

Ho....I thought you had another "incident" afta reading your blog title.

Small keed time we used to make our own mudslides in the ballpark. Just keep smoooshing the grass and dirt until you get about a good 10 yard strip of mud. On one hill even mo betta.
Then you sprint to the mud strip and slide howeva you like. On your okole, stomach or standing up.....like surfing. Talk about getting mud all over da place. Gives new meaning to the the term...."skid marks".

I used to wash my car in heavy rain too. Easy and conserve water too.

  4. munch:

rain! :-D i loooove the rain IF i get to stay inside, grab a blanket and watch a movie or something. unfortunately most of the time i encounter the rain in the past few years, i've been at school, in the middle of walking to my car, trying to have a nice day at da beach, or sitting in traffic (caused by the rain of course ;-) ).
growing up where i live, it rained there even when most of the rest of the island was dry...so i'm no stranger to the drops (or sheets!) but i still not hardcore like some of the neighborhood kids. you know during the 40 days of rain? those kids were boogie boarding in their driveways and some even in the street!! dangerous but looked like fun.

Yeah, sometimes just da little stuff makes it cool yeah? I like it wen it rains and it's "cool" rain, not da humid kine. Dat's da snuggle kine weather....uh, censored aftah dat...

  6. MoOgooGuypAN:

Here's my rainy day story...it all happend today. I left for work a little earlier than usual because of the rain. People in Hawaii can't drive in the rain. Anyway, I live Central but work on the west side which is usually good for traffic...not today. Of course if get one 8 car pile up at the Aiea off den cannot help...but these f&^$n' east bound (only like 50) cheaters were jamming up everyone else who follows the rules of the road. I'm talking about the main strip by the big Waipio park. These f*(&%n' Central people pull into the shoulder lane/bike path and pass everyone by to U-turn at the entrance at the park and cut infront of everyone else who was waiting in traffic for their turn. WWD? or WTFiWD? These people caused law-abiding-aloha-style people like me later for work . I mean, get traffic, we all going be late anyway, they should have left earlier if that's the case. Rain. Rain just brings out bad Hawaii drivers. Nix that. Traffic brings makes bad Hawaii drivers worse. It's dog-eat-dog out there. Becareful driving and take it easy.

  7. LRob:

Brah its raining RIGHT NOW....and I gotta run an errand for work...on foot! What perfect timing! Actually, if I wasn't dressed in work clothes, I'd be "Shoots! Lets go!". But now I gotta find an umbrella so my work clothes don't get soaked and I don't look like a bum in front of my boss.

Man I wish I was still a kid...I wouldn't have cared less and just went for it.

  8. Cin:

Remember 'bout 4-5 yrs ago when it rained consistently in Jan, Feb., & March? Kids were kept outta school. About lunch time, my youngest daughter came running in the house & said, "Mom! How come get all the stuff floating in the yard?" My 1st response: "I dunno". Then, WHAM. I fly out on the front porch, & what do I see? Empty 5 gal. buckets floating around, slippas, work gloves, goggles, hard hats, lumber (we had construction going on at the time) balls, toys, all that stuff was floating away, just going with the current. You know the telephone poles that we use for parking bumpers? They were floating down the driveway. All the kids helped gather stuff & push the poles back. Kids had a blast trying to do log rolls. My daughter lost one side of her slipper in the muck. It just sucked it off her foot and swallowed it up! After the water drained away, the hole where she lost lost it was filled up and smooth, couldn't even tell that the hole was ever there. Didn't bother digging for it. We lost that one side, another full pair, and 1 side athletic shoe (forgot to grab the backdoor slippahs & shoes). The bad side to this adventure? Choke mosquitoes!
The best thing to eat? Grandpa-style miso soup with pork & knotted konbu!

i don't have any rainy day stories :( i'm always avoiding the rain . . .at any cost!! haha . . . i went to disneyland a few years ago and it was pouring one night . . . i had fun running back to the hotel - screaming just for fun . . . but everybody wanted to change clothes and go back out - not me!! i cranked up the heat in the room and took a HOT shower. even rides that get you soaked, i won't ride them . . . i'll watch the bags and take pictures!!

  10. islandgirl in nc:

I miss the Hawaii rains. I grew up on the Hamakua coast of the Big Island, so when it rained, it poured! The best was listening to the rain pounding the tin metal roof. Loud as heck but also made the best sound when falling asleep. I miss hearing the rain like that. I also loved going swimming in the ocean when it was raining. My dad thought it was the best time to go...miss those days...

  11. Goodbeer:

Tackle football in the mud and throw away the bvds after cuz not going get the brown out and anyone who sees them going get the wrong idea.

  12. frankie:

My fave was when me and da boish would play football on Cooke Field when it was pouring. In those cases no one got hurt rom the astroturf and because most of the plays were running plays we got to gang-tackle! Woop!

  13. BananaFish:

during one big rain while I was going to UH, had CHOKE people sliding down the big hill at the bottom of the towers down to the football practice field. That hill is kinda gnarly, cause get rocks sticking out. Not big kine, but big enough to rip your pants. I saw a couple of football players with ripped pants. That was too chaotic, so our gang went to a smaller hill connecting the 2 practice fields, and had it all to ourselves. :)
Tried getting on to Cooke field, but security gave us the boot :(

Man, that was one of the best times I had in college, and wasn't even drunk :D

Yeah, had to throw the bib-a-dees away, cause that thing was totally brown, like one big skid mark. ;)

  14. Goodbeer:

At UH games, I used to sit in the orange near two ladies who, when raining, used to wear full on two piece hooded rain suits, clear plastic sheeting over their laps plus one umbrella each. I used to think maybe they wuz wicked witches or allergic to water or something and I bet they only took portagee baths.

  15. M:

Three years ago we went camping on Presidents day weekend. It started raining on Friday and continued to rain harder that night and Saturday. We had planned to stay till Monday hoping that it would clear up by then. Monday morning comes and it's still pouring and now it's time to pack up. Everything is soaked and I have a pick up truck so what was dry is now soaked as I load the truck up. What a mess, everything would have to be dried after I get home before I can put back things back to where it belongs. It rained for 3 months from that weekend.

I like to eat ramen or udon or katsu curry or drink miso soup.

  16. snow:

It's so super gloomy today - I wish it would just pour so it would take away some of the vog!! I will have to try to make some Grandpa-style miso soup with port and knotted konbu - sounds so ono (though I know no one can make as good as grandpa, yeah Cin?)!

I dunno... my more recent rain memories aren't too good... we have a steep driveway and when it rains hard, it's a river!! One time our neighbor parked their car with their tires facing our driveway, which diverted all the water flowing down the street into our driveway! Luckily, my sister and I were able to get some sandbags out so our house didn't get flooded, but... yikes!

I do remember, however, playing out in the rain with my mom, small kid time. We'd grab out umbrellas (yeah, I neva like get wet!) and run around in the driveway!! Aww... I had kind of forgotten about that! Thanks for making me remember!

  17. 9th Island Girl:

I remember when I used to walk to school and to work. When it would rain, I would ALWAYS get soaked by the cars whizzing by through a puddle that would splash all over me. Now that I mostly drive, I try to be really careful when pedestrians are around.

If I have no place else to go, I love walking in the rain. I love the sound and smell of the rain, and it's a wonderful feeling to be out there in the rain. When I get home, it's hot chocolate and cookies!

  18. hemajang:

Yeah, Hilo guys know rain. First time I saw a definitive wall of rain. It was coming from the bay. It was unreal...could even hear the roar on falling water coming upon us. We were in the park and started running toward our hotel. Got soaked.

Was just talking to co-worker about army days in nam during the monsoon season when it rained continuously day and night. You slept with your poncho on but with no cover overhead, it was pretty miserable being wet all day and night.

And today we going eat pho for lunch...nice when weather cool and wet...how ironic.

Yup, the corrugated tin roof. You could tell when had real hard rain. Da ting was LOUD!

I still get dat my house...well, not da roof but our gutters make a real hollow sound like water dripping into a bucket - soothing but had to turn up da volume on da tv.

  21. Goodbeer:

I neva see um during the Von Appen years.

  22. munch:

ahh MoOgoo i feel your pain...got stuck in that too and is it just me or seems like lately, rain = brake lights? fo real no can drive even if it's just a little drizzle...too much!

ho BL speaking of gutters, the ones at my house used to get all stuck pipe thanks to the birdies dropping their sticks & leaves in them. when it would rain hard, the water no can drain fast enough so it starts to overflow :-( just as soon as you think that you made it to the front door un-drenched, BOOM! a curtain of water. they finally got smart and put da grate on top so nothing can fall through and clog 'um up.
i going buy soup for lunch now;-)

  23. BananaFish:

Oh yeah, rainy day grinds - for me, gotta be saimin. One big bowl, with char siu and won tons if you lucky.

Miso soup w/ the konbu or katsu curry sound good too.

I guess any kind of hot soup is good on a rainy day. Chowder is a winnah too. As long as not tilapia chowder. ;)

  24. 1dble:

I miss da rain on da tin roof at my grandmas house... from Hamaside too. Dat sound would lull me to sleep.

Most recent rain story... this past Na Opio season, one day was raining so bad, da poor kids was getting drenched. You'd think it's all good considering they paddling anyway... Wen dey got to da start line dey was already bailing, kinda hard fo' race when your wa'a is filling up with water and you feel like you going sink. Dey was so miserable wen da race was pau, all soaked and cold!

  25. mjstc:

Also grew up on the Big Island, Hilo side. Too many rainy day stories to remember...

Islandgirl and CW, yeah that distinct rain-hitting-iron-roof sound = soothing. my wife, who's from Oahu, and children couldn't fall asleep the first time they heard 'it' and complained that 'it' was deafening. whenever it rains for consecutive days during our visits back, my children ask me what did you guys do since it rains so much here?! hard to explain though, but they've enjoyed playing in the Hilo rain too.

  29. roach:

When we were kids, the neighborhood "gang" used to wait for the rainy days to play football in the mud. I remember one time, we tore up our front yard so bad that my dad was pissed off of days. We had a grand time slipping and sliding all over yard but it was the last time we ever used our house.
Now, a couple of drops on my head and I'm looking shelter or an umbrella. What a woose !

  30. kikaida:

Hey Lance, I'm sure you got soaked to the beybahdeez riding your hog! Anyway, one time was pretty bad going west on H1 by downtown, and couldn't stop since I was trying to outrun the storm.

Made it as far as Nimitz Hwy, where I had to stop and wait under the viaduct. Was one of those storms that just came and never let up. So finally I braved rain since i had to get home and luckily it let up a little.

But man, soaked like a wet dog, while having to remove the shades since couldn't see, was pretty rough!

Thanks for the hug Lance but...find a girl to do it. LOL.

As for my feel good rain story (I stay all good now).
When ever it rains I just like to stay home and cook me up a nice bowl of saimin with spam. Oh yah, and no can forget sitting out in the patio having a nice cold beer and some fresh poke just breathing in the rain clean air and listening to some Hawaiian kine 105.1. Ah....relaxing.

Sound of rain on tin roof. Yes, who can forget? So I was like 20 or 21 and was in Massachusetts. First time in a place with snow. The radio said, OK tonight it's gonna snow. Excited! So I fall asleep, no snow yet. In the morning pull up the blinds hey! snow everywhere.

First thought was, "cannot be! I never hear anyting."
