"Lui" Da Man

Sorry about yesterday guys and gals but you know how Wednesday's goes for me - deadlines, deadlines, deadlines. Then in between that, I had rehab to go to - what fun.

Well I had a blog all set up ready to go and then I read about "Lui".

Holy Mackerel! Or should I say, Holy Ensure!

Uncle is three-quarters of a century young (yes, that's 75 years) and he's still body boarding! Not that small kiddie stuff but some real waves. Just from the pic, it looks like he went out on a recent 2-3 feet south swell (Hawaiian scale of course) and Uncle surf's EVERYDAY!

Ho, make me shmall kine shame!

But then again, he is retired, living the good life and to him, that's surfing everyday. I was like that when I didn't work...ok, actually I was like that back in the day...when I was in school...ok, ok - when I actually attended classes.

His hui has diminished due to factors beyond their control: distance, medical...uh, turning 80 and knees finally couldn't handle the climb both up and down. Then on top of that, Uncle no even use the walkway fo' go down...he HIKE down the mountain side!

Wassap Wit Dat! Chicken skin dat kine!

Check out his board too...old school to da max with skeds and all but Uncle rips it up!

I only hope (ok, wish) I end up like him cause I not too far behind (physically). My mind always going be like I'm 12 but my body so buss' up, I told Da Wife when I get my Little Rascal in a few years, I going supe it up with one tricked out motor, 4x4 tires (rims too) and suspension!

But you know what? He said it best,

"It's fun to catch a nice wave and to make it," Ling said. "When I slide down the face of the wave and I am barreling along, I am yelling and screaming. I am having fun."

Classic.

    Hey BL,

    You got outta jail! :-)

If I can do HALF of what Uncle Lui's doing when I get to be his age I'll be ecstatic!

    OL

  2. opso:

my senitiments exactly OL. Lui rocks!

good to see this kine stuff. makes peeps more motivated to get out there and live life to the fullest.
jus like you BL....he make me shmall kine shame.

  3. JuSaMee:

those are the kind of retiree's i wanna be like...gotta try and take care of ourselves now so we can be as active as uncle lui!! i don't wanna be one of them people too sick or hunched over to do anything! you wanna enjoy retirement...it's the summer vacation for adults! lol!!

  4. Coconut Willy:

Actually, it would be better to retire early so can enjoy more. Yeah Lui rocks and I want to be like him, but I want to start now! Well, ASAP...

  5. munch:

it always makes me happy to see "seniors" that are so active because they're not letting the fact that they're getting "older" bring them down...just say "NO!" to the knitted sweater-vests, suspenders, high-water pants, instant coffee & daytime soaps! these folks are out & about walking around the malls in the morning (which btw i think is way safer than walking out on a dark street) before the stores open, working out and basically being more active than those younger than them!
shame ah!? there's nothing that prevents me from doing stuff like that but after work i always tell myself that i feel too tired (read:unmotivated) so tomorrow, tomorrow...hello!? how many tomorrows i had already? :-P
Lui is unreal!!! i could never to what he does (i don't think i'd make it down that hillside he hikes down...i'd probably slide down :-( ) but like everyone else, i can only hope that i will enjoy my retirement the way he does.

  6. 9th Island Girl:

I can imagine you doing the same thing when you get to be senior citizen age. Nice story.

  7. hemajang:

I play tennis twice a week with our regular bunch. Most of us in our 50's and 60's but one is 85 and still strong both mentally and physically. He my hero, man. Up until a couple years ago, we had another guy about 85 but he had to move to the mainland and he was the most competitive guy on the court...nevah like lose. There is no giving chance with us, yesterday the 85 year old was my partner and the other guys were lobbing and drop shotting him...anything to win a point...huuuu, no mercy, but that's the way we like it. On the other days he plays with the ladies in the morning but he rather compete with the men and the faster pace. However, the wahines that play with us are just as competitive and tough.

I'm out...but my ex-boss isn't. Look for tomorrow's SHOUT OUT. And yeah, I only hope I still can use the bathroom by myself.

Wow, jus' had flashbacks. I used to play during my lunch at Nuuanu YMCA with guys more than twice my age and same thing...guys nevah like lose. Had one guy must be in da upper 60's dat had two knee braces on and almost ran like Frankenstein - kinda straight legged. But da Uncle could play. He would have these really high lob shots to the base line dat would drive me nuts and just test your patience...but sometimes I was mean and did a cut shot...believe it or not, he would get some of those too! Missed those days....anybody free for lunch?

I loved what JuSaMee said: "it’s the summer vacation for adults!" I can wait to grow old, but I can't wait to retire and have my summer vacation! If you live life like Lui, it's all good! Good for him and, hopefully, we'll be able to do the same! Who said retirement has to be boring or old fut?!

  10. Ocean Lover:

"old fut", "jew fut", "stink fut"..................

Da mainland lurkers going tink "Huh?"

  11. BananaFish:

    Wow, Lui is da man!

Chee, I don't think I can go down that hill now, and I half his age! Well, maybe I can go down the hill, but it will involve some unpleasant tumbling and swearing. ;)

Maybe if my joints weren't made of Rice Krispies, I could do um. :)

I'll stick to Wii Fit, thanks. :D

  12. jiggyboo:

yup i agree w/all of you......Lui is da man. I mean 75 years young and he doesn't look his age....wow! talk about being fit. i like the part where he said when he's yelling and screaming - just like a young kid i would think - when he's barreling along.....wish i'm as limber as he is when i get to his age....good read. we should have more like that and see retirement doesn't mean you gotta watch tv all day long........AU RITE MR. LIU......

  13. M:

I swim alot so I hope that I will be just as healthy and fit as "Lui" when am 75 too.

  14. jiggyboo:

    I mean Lui....dang...spell check. lol

  15. snow:

Ocean Lover... oh, sorry... "old fart." LOL.

  16. mclovin:

    Hey Lance,

Have you ever run into a guy name "Inouye". He must be at least in his 70s. He been surfing alamoana beach park for years. Usually I see him at Courtsl. Always with a smile on his face. I wish I'm able to surf like him when I'm his age.

  17. rn2b:

great story and its something to look forward to. have one supa weekend!!!

You surf there often? You run into da Kauhane's? Grandfather, daughter, grandsons all go out - usually Sundays at Courts...all longboarders. Also know da guy whose family owns Monarch Seafood (ono onion salad dressing, not to mention poke!). But no, don't know that Inouye but know one das around at age but is a land lover.

  19. mclovin:

    Braddah Lance,

Don't surf courts as often as i'd like to. I usually avoid it on weekends and only go in the morning on weekdays. There's a pretty cool crew out there at that time. I've been surfing that place off and on since the mid eighties. Thats when I first met Inouye. However I would probably recognize the Kauhane's (did he have a red van at one time?) I'll look out for them in the future.
