DK Steakhouse...Finally
By Braddah Lance
Yes, finally.
Da Wife and I finally celebrated our 1st wedding anniversary - almost a month late - and finally ate at the highly recommended DK Steakhouse.
Bear with me as I take you through our day leading up to DK's.
Our plan was this.
Wake up early. Take down our recyclables. Buy a weedwacker. Clean da yard (work up an appetite fo' latah). Wash da dogs. Get ready. Go to DK's.
Here's wat really happened.
Woke up a little later than we (I) wanted. Sorting our recyclables took longer than we expected - had CHOKE cans! We did end up with almost $50 so it was worth it... maybe not storing it but definitely redeeming it. Of course it was blown on buying trash containers for those very same recyclables because after months in plastic bags, being so brittle, the bags broke and out spilled cans everywhere.
Weedwacker. Check. We (I) ended up buying an electric one - cause I nevah like spend money on gas - and it worked out fine. Dis is wat I had to tackle and dis was jus' da front...
(sorry dat the pics are so huge - I not like Uncle Rodney and know how to do da fancy stuff... yet)
Four hours latah....

And wat's a job without battle scars...

I thought I severed my foot from da weedwackah... don't ask how...
Wash da dogs. No can - not enough time. So we get ready and head out. We driving up Red Hill and wat do we see?

Wassap Wit Dat!
Da Wife and I was cracking up cause you don't see dat too often - wicker furniture in the da back seat of one convertible with two ti leaf trees flapping away. Plus, they nevah even tie 'em down. If you look closely to da right, da wahine stay holding 'em with one hand.
Yeah, I changed lanes.
So we finally arrived and yeah, shorts and slippahs was one prerequisite.

So on with it! Eh, and no buss' my olo's fo' blurry pictures - I tryin'!

Dinning at sunset.... what a mood setter!

Da Wife had a Hefeweizen

I had da Kona Big Wave Pale Ale... a few of dem.
Was smooooth!

Drinks in hand and waiting to order........

Started off with "Black & Blue Ahi Sashimi - 'dusted with cajun spices, seared RARE, with a HOT & SPICY mustard sauce'".
Fish was excellent and spices were a bit much but ono nonetheless and no, it wasn't hot or spicy... fo' me.

"The 'Ultimate' Caesar Salad - crisp romaine lettuce, house made Caesar dressing, shaved parmesan-reggiano"

Bread of course - tasty and creamy herbed butter
On to dinner!

Cajun steak fries
The dry spice rub made the steak fries a bit dry and seemed to have been sprinkled "post fried"

"Asparagus Milanese - Farm fresh egg, truffle oil, herbs"
If you love herbs, this side is definetly fo' you

Damn. Fo'got da dish name fo' dis one too but it was a creamy mac and fancy cheese dish. Mac 24/7 bettah send their chefs ovah hea to get their recipe cause dis was most definetly da best mac and cheese I've evah had.

Da Wife had the "22oz Dry-Aged Bone-In Rib Eye - This steak is the juicest of all and is considered our 'Premier Steak'... 31 DAY DRY-AGED and served with our house made jus"

As reader's suggested, I had the "'Paniolo' Rib Eye Steak - 22oz Rib Eye Steak on the bone House made "Paniolo Style" Dry Rub, with grilled local onions & cream corn"

Not fo' da faint at heart. Da buggah was hugemangeous!

Open wide!

Compliments of our server, Kelly. A mango/lilikoi thingy... sorry. But was sweet and tangy... and good!

Kanack time...... so sleeeeepy.
So how do I rate DK Steakhouse?

Das right! Five Shakas and a Howzit!
Dat dry-aged stuff really makes da difference in da texture and flavah of da meat! Was so frickin' ono! Broke da mouth in several places!
I could do without da spice rub and da sides not as spectacular - except da mac and cheese thing - but da steak itself... WOW! No can compete. How I going eat steak anywhere else now?! WWD!
One suggestion, no fill up on da bread and sides cause da steak will fill you up. And yes, we did have left ovahs and it was no way the same as having it fresh off da grill. Next time, I going jus' pound da steak and jus' take home da sides.
Da service was excellent! Props goes out to Kelly our server for being so friendly and knowledgeable! We haven't had service li'dat in choke long. Our table (requested fo' it at da time of reservations) was terrific! Ambiance fantastic!
Da Wife and I no eat dat kine fancy places too often but she stay planning fo' her birthday coming in a few months already... I not going stop her.
But as several Kwonics have mentioned countless times before, it's not da food dat makes da meal, it's da company. And dat's a huge rogah dat!
Da Wife and I haven't enjoyed ourselves li'dat in quite some time so it was supah nice. Going broke da bank a little but an evening out with Da Wife and spending some QT with her....... priceless.
SHOUT OUT: Much Mahalos goes to Warrior Dave fo' going out of your way and sending me da DK Steakhouse coupon!
Also a couple sports shout outs to Parker McLachlin for winning his first PGA Tour victory and of course to our fan favorite Colt Brennan - Braddah looked good in his pro debut!

Wassup Wit Dat!

BL:
Nice Photoshop job you did on your before/after lawn pictures....you don't need Rodney's skills with cameras
You made me hungry again...it's after lunch here.
August 4th, 2008 at 10:28 am
Nice pics!! Now I hungry and thirsty. Excellent choice of beverages (my wife and I love that Kona Big Wave too).
August 4th, 2008 at 10:46 am
Hooooooo da beer looks good right about...NOW!
BL, you gotta wear shoes for weed wack. See what happen when you wear rubbah slippahs. I had that happen to me once, then pau. BTW, you gotta pull them weeds cause they just going grow back by next week.
So how was the prices at DK Steakhouse? I don't even know where dat stay. At least you treat your wife right. I would have just gone to Chilis down da street. Hahaha. Man I like go Times Steak Plate fo' lunch today. I know not the same, but your pics made me ono for beef.
August 4th, 2008 at 10:46 am
BL, you must live lower PC by the looks of your yard...what's with the stepping stones in front of the 3 moss rocks. Looks like you maybe go put some of your bird of paradise on the rocks and worship the help-me-with-the-yard gods? And what, you no put shoes on when weed wacking? Hopefully you had safety goggles on.
Glad you had a really nice anniversary dinner at DK Steakhouse and thanks for sharing. Hopefully, I'll make it there soon...wife loves steaks.
August 4th, 2008 at 10:46 am
Now I hungry for DK's steak! I wanna try Wolfgang's opening at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. They have dry aged beef also.
Also have a certificate for Ruth's Chris.
So much meat, so little time.
August 4th, 2008 at 11:00 am
Dang, it was dat noticable?
Don't tell Da Wife dat.
.
.
Dat's da only time I try different beers is wen we stay out... wow, anoddah wahine dat drink beer? Cheee-hooo.
.
.
Prices I thought was reasonable considering wat they do fo' da steak and it wasn't outrageous. The entrees did range from about $20 - 50 and there were also "dining for two" menus. The rest about average - maybe a jus' a tad mo'. DK's stay in da Marriott hotel... I'm prett sure.
.
.
Yup, lower and no, "all" fixtures, stones, rocks and shrubbery were from Da Wife's grandparents. If was me, dat place be leveled and be made into an outdoor paina area... still tryin' to convince Da Wife.
Wow. Got some real wahines hea eh? Drink beer and eat steak... au'right!
.
.
Me too! Does Ruth's have dry-aged? Well, anoddah review to come...and compare!
August 4th, 2008 at 11:15 am
BL,
Those steaks sure look guuuudddd...I was hungry before I read the blog, and now I am absolutely starving. Too bad cannot go get steak for lunch.
Better get cracking on those plans for da wife's bday...will be here before you know it. Will you go Le Bistro in Niu Valley for that?
I feel your pain with the weekwhacking. I was cutting up some tree branches with chainsaw once and stopped to brush something off my shoes, and I guess I relaxed my hand holding the chainsaw and gave my leg (wearing shorts) a good size gash because the chainsaw hadn't come to complete stop yet. I managed to stop the bleeding, but da wife nearly passed out when she saw it...it really did look a lot worse than it felt.
August 4th, 2008 at 11:16 am
wow...that looks good!! the hubby is in the dog house right now...had a FREE fiji and j. boog concert that he was at for a work thing and he NEVER CALL ME UP TO COME!!...so now he wanna take me to dinner...should i suggest DK's?? lol!!
August 4th, 2008 at 11:17 am
That "open wide" picture was classic!
Ho, BL, if my husband didn't have his cholesterol test coming up, your five shakas review would have made us rush DK...good pix and descriptions. Love the shot of you and your bandaged foot in front of the sign.
August 4th, 2008 at 11:30 am
yay the dk review!!! 22oz steak
*faints* that's ginormous! but ehh if you gonna go some place like dk no can be panty & order like a 8oz piece huh?
glad you & Da Wife had an awesome anniversary celebration!! if i were a cow i'd be very afraid of you.
as for da yard....Braddah how you wen buss up your foot?! those weedwackers got a mind of their own huh? not bad tho, not too many rat bites in da grass and look you have stepping stones!! and how's dat car...it's one thing to be driving a convertible (9 times outta 10 it's being driven by haole tourist) but den you gonna pack up wicker couch & make your passenger hold onto it while you drive on da freeway?!? aigoo da ti leaf must have been for good luck for their drive.
August 4th, 2008 at 11:37 am
Nope, probably not. She's ono fo' DK's.
.
.
Heck yeah!
.
.
You eagle eye you! Did I mention dat dey have a pretty good keiki menu too?
.
.
Yeah, almost like going to Ruth's and jus' ordering salad.
I nevah even thought of dat. They must of had pork too jus' in case.
August 4th, 2008 at 11:37 am
You and da wife are a lovely couple, BL! The food look ono, the scenery (including your wife) was beautiful and it sounded like a nice anniversary. Enjoy all this alone time together before the keiki show up
because those times alone will be far and few in between...lol! Hmmm... now I like go eat steak...
August 4th, 2008 at 11:48 am
everyone pretty much expected the food to be good but frickin' good job with the jungle at the house=) hopefully all that hard work doesn't affect your play on tue! haha!
August 4th, 2008 at 11:51 am
Hoo boy! Those steaks looked ono! Me and the wife usually go to Hy's for our anniversary, but I think I'm going to give DK's a try, totally based on your photos.
For the weedwacker incident, you'll only do that once (if you're smart). I weedwacked with slippers ONCE. But I had rocks and debris hitting my feet all day. From then on, I always wear shoes to weedwack.
August 4th, 2008 at 11:55 am
I'm surprised you didn't almost sever a finger with the weed-wacker.
Dinner looked super good! Never been there yet, but may have to try it now that you've posted a review and great pics!
August 4th, 2008 at 11:55 am
Thanks for the shout out Braddah Lance!

August 4th, 2008 at 12:13 pm

August 4th, 2008 at 12:29 pm

August 4th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
Ho Lance! Shame on you(tisk, tisk, tisk,w/finger wagging). Safety first! Guess you learned that one the hard way. Gotta wear long pants & shoes! No matter what--you just don't know what kind of critters are out there! Oh! And safety glasses. What happens if you kick up a rock? Put your eye out. Then what are we to do? Have to wait twice as long for your post. Nah. What's up with your potted plants? Lookin' kind a dead.
Glad you & Terri had a great time. Steaks look great. DK's should give you a discount on your next dinner. I think a lot of us are headed that way!
August 4th, 2008 at 1:20 pm

Ho braddah, better wear some eye and foot protection next time. No fun getting pebbles thrown into the little piggies. ITAI! Even worse if fly in your face!
Mo' bettah fo' me if I cannot see the pics - I <3 steak, so would drive me crazy if I could see it. I'll torture myself when I go home.
Couple years ago I went to a conference at the Marriott, and was tempted to go DK's. I nevah like go with another dude, though, and just the 2 of us. Bleah!
I would rather go by myself.
Hmm, maybe on my next trip to HNL....

August 4th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
Eh BL,
I echo all the comments on the ono looking grinds.....AND, I echo the comments on the eye protection and foot protection when doing da yard with a weedwhacker. I use boots. Go to Home Depot and buy the boots that the guys who do concrete work use......about $15/pair but WELL WORTH IT. No sked using the weedwhacker, stepping on one centipede, or stepping in dog doo doo.
OL
