I Know You!

September 29th, 2008
By

Well actually, I hope I don't.

In Sunday's "Stealing Beer From Hawaii Fastop?", it was unreal to read that a store is "fighting" back.

Wat are they doing?

They are posting surveillance footage of people actually stealing and walking off with items such as a 12-pack of beer. How you walk out of a store with half a case of anything beats me cause I would think that if you were trying to steal something from any store it would either fit in your pocket or your under your shirt.

As I read the article I was shocked to read that most, if not all, the people interviewed knew at least one of the perpetrators. Well, not really shocked - we all know dat 'dis aina too small and we all know each oddah one way or anoddah - but more curious to find out what the people who know the shoplifters would do.

Do you turn them in? Do you "tell" on them? Do you make fun of them? Do you try to talk some sense into them? A very troubling dilemma between yourself and your friend or relative.

But only in Hawaii do you have the "shame" factor.

Sure other parts of the world has it too but I think in Hawaii, it's such a huge part of our culture, it makes a difference in how we act. Our actions tend to be misconstrued as being "too polite" or "timid" but in the end, we no like "make shame".

For the underage shoplifters at Fastop, it's nice to hear that their parents at least make amends to the criminal activity by ponying up the kala for the items because once the items are paid for, the picture comes down.

But wait, wat da heck are underage people even doing stealing more worse stealing alcohol?

Wassap Wit Dat!

Is it ODD to bee more afraid of "shame" 'den da law? Should other stores with shoplifting problems follow Fastop's tactic? If you've seen those kines of pictures before, do you look out of curiosity or maybe for a "friend"?

Good thing I dunno wat YOU look like.......

DA PIDGIN WORD OF DA DAY! -
(as quoted from Da Kine Dictionary & Pidgin To Da Max… wit a Braddah Lance twist)

BACHI
(ba-CHEE)

Haole Translation: Japanese curse, karma

Use: Wen you do something bad, rotten, nasty etc, going come back to you!

Sentence: “Eh, it's not free-99. Bettah watch out you going get bachi.”

Sentence: “Hoi, no make li'dat. Bachi brah!”

They put up pics of DUI victims on a website here.

  2. roach:

I think the fear of bringing shame to one's self and family comes from the strong oriental influence in Hawaii. Look at Japan, some people would rather kill themselves rather than facing their families after committing a shameful act. When I was a kid, there was nothing worst than facing your dad after doing something stupid. BTW good morning BL.

  3. islandgirl in nc:

After a short trip off campus from high school, we stopped at a local community store to get snacks. We weren't supposed to stop there but our advisor let us. A couple of classmates and I were looking for ice cream in one of those ice cream cases where the top slid open. I was shocked to see one of my classmates open an ice cream and eat it! I think it was some kind of bon-bon type. What do you say when you see something like that? Well the owners of the store saw the open box and called the school. A bunch of us got called into the principal's office because they had see us by the ice cream case. I had gone home sick when I returned to school, and my mom had to bring me back. The guilty person was figured out. It's hard to tell on a classmate especially when you are in high school. Yeah, I dunno how you can hide a six-pack but I guess people who do this all the time can.

  4. hemajang:

@islandgirl in nc - I guess considered acceptable but technically I could have been arrested yesterday while at Star Market. Wife and I sampled the seedless grapes...yes, we ate da grape w/o paying! We were so blatant, da produce guy was right there and probably saw us in da act. Anyway, was sweet and crunchy so we bought a bag. Actually, wife went through several bags and picked through them for the nicest looking bunch and put in a separate plastic bag to purchase. I dunno, I don't do that and will buy a bag of grapes as they packed them instead of picking through them...I think da produce guy would be more irked at that than sampling da grapes. She does the same with loose celery and broccoli and will break off whatever she needs.

Maybe next time we go Star, they going have pictures of wife and I with grape to mouth...huuuu, da shame.

  5. Ynaku:

I agree with the above. What irks me is people would open boxes and eat stuff without paying. I find wrappers stuffed behind other groceries. Make like some big box retailers and put video cameras all over da place. and make announcements.

Eh lady! You da one wearing da red polka dot dress with da yellow crocs in aisle 3. Yeah you! You going pay for dat candy you just wen eat? I spock you 8O you no shame?

  6. NKHEA:

Got store that I buy alot of my power tools from, they are doing the same. They have a picture of one guy that just grabbed some power tools and ran out of the store to a waiting car 8O Back a few years ago knew some people that would be on workmens comp. with back injury, but come bowling night they stay right dea bowling 8O WWD Think most of the stealing is drug related now days :( As for the guy's that cheat the workmens comp. they going get "BACHI" :)

hemajang; next time I go to Star Market I going look for your pic on da doa :)

See ya all lata time fo go work :(

hoo, you mean those open barrels of pastachios in the market ova heah are not for sampleen'? wow, bummahs..

by da way, wonder if eatin' while grocery you're shoppeen' has a name?

in da restaurant biz, wen you like try da unfinished artichoke or take one bite of rare roas' beef, we use to call it "sea-gulleen".. sounds disgusteen' but wuz some good eatz, esp. wen da girl no like even touch da steak..

eh, lady, bot' you an' i stay watchin' yo' girlish figgah, an' t'anks, eh, fo da grindz..

oddah-wize, no like trow da firs' stone ova heah.. used "five fingah" discount a few times myself..

howevah, will admit dat of you goin' steal, at leas' don't get caught.. one crime at a time, brah, stealin' and stupidity, dats two crimez..

  9. B:

I have worked in retailing for like 35 years. have seen it all, pretty tired of people stealing, shoplifting, watevas. whateva can be done to curb shoplifting, gotta try fo do-um. underage drinking is anodda problem too. and the burden lies on the establishment selling. alot of times would hear parents say, " how come you when sell my kid alcohol?"
100% of the time, someone of age wen purchase for their kid( da store neva know dea was buying fo a minor). but sometimes I used to tink how come da parents or da kid cannot take responsibility. so its good to see parents go back to Fastop and take responsibility fo da kids. nowdays to easy fo blame da odda person fo da bad dat dea wen do.

  10. M:

Even if the parents pay for the stolen beer that still doesn't make it right. They still should be charged with the crime.

  11. Kelli:

Ohayoo! Interesting how the word of the day is 'bachi' because if you do that kine stuff, like stealing from the store, you going get BACHI. BTW, I borrowed your phrase on my blog today. Hope you don't mind. :-)

  12. frankie:

That's awesome. They should do the same for everyone voting no on the bailout plan!

  13. sassy7:

They gotta put their pictures up...other wise the perp's will think they can do it over and over again. When people see their pictures and start talking the "shame" is the lesson. People have a hard time "living" that down...you know what I mean...I had one Aunty on one board...garans babarans...us neices and nephews never let her "live um down". And still till today...we poke at her about it...and the "shame"...only she still cuss us out..but no go away...She was "stupid" she knew it...and it bit her in the a- -. Now for your stupidity....suck um up...and own up..Make sign..and put them by the store..."Eh...yup..I the lolo on the Board" no make shame!!!!!!

  15. JuSaMee:

i remember once i called in sick to work, but still went to class at UH. just my luck the news cameras were there for one reason or another and they asked if i'd be willing to go on camera and share my opinions...um, no! i jus called in sick to work...i can't be on tv!! lol!! as for me the "shame factor" played a role big time and honestly because this island is so small that kept me from trying to do REALLy bad stuff, cuz i always figured someone my parents knew would find out and tell on me!! lol!!

  16. zzzzzz:

Sounds like it's more the parents that shame, not the kids. The kids no shame plus don't care about the law.

Hemajang, if you go Safeway, just ask the produce clerk and he (or she) will probably give you a sample for free. One time at Times the guy actually cut a fruit so we could taste.

  17. Goodbeer:

Stealing anything (especially beer) should be a capital offense.

I'm glad to see Fastop actually doing something about that problem. Maybe after the traffic cams are installed, the City can somehow post pictures of the violators online or in the newspaper. Like that town on the mainland where motorists caught DUI have to stand on the street holding signs identifying them as offenders, so shame I bet they quit drinking. Hopefully the threat of everyone seeing their face as one redlight runner, or carpool lane violator, or pedestrian cutoffer, or whateva kine traffic law violator will be enough to keep drivers in line and in compliance. If not, den make stupid traffic violations like that a capital offense, too. Remove da "ainokea" genes from the pool. Enough already!!!

  18. kako mochi:

maaan - i pressed something and my post got lost . . . now i gotta do it all over again :(

    anyway . . . reminds me off some stuffs . . .

i used to go to this one store that would stick the actual checks from peeps when it got returned for not having enough money . . . that's SHAME!! my roommate at the time thought one of those checks were mine cause i had the generic bank issued ones.

this other time, i was at the king st. baskin & robins w/my friend when this homeless looking guy walked in through the back entrance, walked to the freezer display, grabbed one of those clown cones, and walked out the front entrance! it happened so fast and he did it so nonchalantly that all we did was laugh! i guess the more time you spend trying NOT to look suspicious - you end up LOOKING suspicious . . . better to get in and out!! LOL :)

  21. Ocean Lover (Morning BL!):

    Morning BL! ;-)

I forgot to add that thieves are like the "skid marks on da BBD". I USED TO THINK that if kids steal, that's because they not "grown up". Yet when I see that there's NO AGE LIMIT FOR THIEVES...........

Can you tell of my "dislike" for thieves?

    OL

  22. opso:

it's only da "good" peeps dat da "make shame" factor comes into play.

heck....just last month at my condo.....had one pikcha from da surveili.....survielle....."security camera" in da lobby showing dis moke action guy actually smiling at da camera while driving out and stealing somebody's moped. WWD!!

nowdays all da criminals and low lifes.....heck even some regular peeps no care about "make shame" anymore.

    i'm just saying.....

  23. BananaFish:

That's a great idea to post the offenders' pictures. They might not be shame in the spur of the moment, but once the relatives and friends see the pics, then they come shame! You can imagine the grandparents seeing their grandkid ripping off beer in the pics! Dats fo' bus' out some cracks! Not just on the grandkids, but on the parents too!

"Whassa mattah you, stealing beea!?! I going knock you out! And you, what kine keeds you stay raising?!? I nevah raise you fo' raise rotten keeds! I KNEW I should have given' you lickens mo' often! I not to old fo' give you lickens you know! Whea my belt!?! 2 fo' 1 specials today! Ai yaaah! you dummies make me so shame! I no can go play cribbage now!"

When I was working retail, I swear, you would see peeps steal the dumbest stuff sometimes. Or, some of the peeps who stole had plenny money on them. WWD?!? Why not just buy um, if you get all dat money? You get $300 in cash in your pocket, and you steal $20 worth of make up?

I saw this one lady steal a kitchen knife once, and she had several thousand dollars on her - she had the deposit from the restaurant she owned. In the same mall as our store. Some shame! Plus, when she was being booked and documented in the store office, she wet herself! Ai goo!

  24. munch (no picture in the window):

aiyah shame! good that the store is taking action to prevent more theft from happening...and i'm surprised no one complaining that some of the offenders are minors, shouldn't have their pic posted...blah blah blah! ehh you old enough to do the crime you lucky you not doing time and it's only a picture.
it's good that the parents come back and take responsibility for their kids actions (sorta) by paying for the beer  but they also better be dishing out some punishment too. man-oh-man i can only imagine what kind of trouble i would have gotten in if i were that kind of kid

and i neva know you could take just what you need in da produce department until i saw my mom do it. she said da produce guy told her when ever it's sold by the pound, you don't have to take da whole bunch. so if you only need 3 stalks celery, or 4 cloves garlic, you can buss 'um apart but no can with green onions...gotta buy da whole bunch ;-)

  25. snow:

i agree with opso... it's only "make shame" if you care! get plenny peeps who stay stupid but proud about what dey wen do. but, good if we can take dea pitcha and dey get caught!

when i was working at a local department store, the thieves would park outside the door, run in and grab racks full of stuff and would run back out to the waiting car! it was too fast... we could never call security in time or get the license plate from the car! we knew they used to stake out the area first, but we couldn't stop them from doing that either... (since they weren't doing anything wrong at the time!)!

when i was working at another local store, we used to have bad checks xeroxed and taped to the counter. one of the checks was from a classmate of mine... i don't know if he knew, but i felt embarassed just helping him 'cause i was always hoping that he wouldn't try to write another check!

  26. bamboohouse808:

I think wit da kids dat steal, they no shame. If they get caught, whatevas. It's their parents dat going be shame. At least the parents SHOULD be shame. And den comes da lickins!! Dats wat da kids should be scared of. And fo da adults that steal, they no shame either. But I bet they would be shame when they meet their cellmate at OCCC!!!

  28. HNL2LAS:

They should do this everywhere! I'm old school, make shame one big deal. Keeps me from even saying stuff that I know SOMEONE should say to rude, stupid people, hehe I'm afraid I'll go off, and den somehow my parents would find out and say stuff to me about making shame... and I'm 30-something years old!!!---even though I know I'm RIGHT!~

I know lotta peeps no care, but yah if they gotta go jail for stealing one "small" thing, maybe they would start to care. Or the whoooole family/town/island know what they did, and someone has to pay for it, lickens are in order baybeee!

Cameras everywhere I tell yah.. with a cage or something around it so no can steal um! Make um stand outside wit da sign after dey do something bad on a busy street corner.... in the newspaper, whatever! I'm a strong believer in bachi,so I try to be good... hahaha I swear I try! Guess I know.. I would get caught.....I shame.... for make shame! bahhaha....

  29. munch:

ehh BL jus broke da wire tie! haha nah, i dunno...but i was all scared the first (and only) time i bought like half a bunch of garlic. was already broken so i just grabbed da other half & was waiting for da cashier tell me "ehh no can buy half li'dat!" but she neva! jus like wen people peel da onions so no need pay for da part you not goin use...what is dat like $0.05?! aigoo

anyway, back to da topic...i remember when i had my first job. we used to accept checks and everytime someone paid with one we had to look through this list of people's names who wrote bad checks. they used to get a list from da bank i think....of people whose checks bounced. once i was @ da register & da person's name was on the list  i neva know what to do so i had to call my manger. you know what else used to irk me? at another job (retail) we would get homeless looking people come in and ask for something that we had locked in the glass case. den while we unlock da case, they try sneak other stuff under their shirt or jacket...but only obvious cuz they get da shifty eyes and hello who wears a sweatshirt in da middle of summer?! da best was when we caught one guy trying to steal....manager tells him "brah i know you get stuff under your jacket. jus put 'em on da counter, no come back & we won't call da cops" but he kept saying he neva take nothing...until 1 of da stuff he had fell on da ground. da genius tried to tell us, "ho i dunno how dat got there!"

  30. NKHEA:

munch; so da Maui onion da cost $5.00 a pound can just peel off couple pcs. fo da poke, no need buy da hole ting :?:

  31. Reido:

I think posting the thieves' photos would work IF they felt shame. It seems to me that the younger generation doesn't share the same values that we did. If they don't feel shame, why would they care if their pictures are posted?

  32. Reido:

  34. NKHEA:

Dis kinda off subject but brought back memories. Waz way back, but it's feel good story. I used to live in Palolo valley, went marketing one day saw the owner talking to some really young kids, she was asking them why they where stealing, they said they where hungry. The owner got a loaf of bread, jar of jelly and peanut butter and made sandwitches for them and told them not to steal and if they hungry just tell her......that made my day :)

  39. J.P.K.:

I heard from a friend that used to work at foot locker and coach that if someone tried to steal something, they couldn't run out to stop them because if they did and the assailant got injured, he/she could sue the store because the person stopping them is still working, thus an agent of the store. the only thing they could do is call security and hope the respond fast enough.

at one of my former workplaces, we actually had a girl that stole thousands of dollars before anyone caught her (from two different stores). i believe she was prosecuted, but don't know if she spent anytime in jail. amazingly, she was still able to get a job after that because i saw her working.

  40. honda si boy (working on hump-day!):

man, i like this store and what it does! but i wonder if it is legal? my car got stolen right in front of shirokiya at ala moana and i was parked right next to on of those camera systems. but the mall security said they cannot look at the video or show the video to me unless they have a police warrant or some bull-crap like that. what the hell yeah? i was pretty upset.
