Wassup Wit Dat!

Were you able to decipher that for those who are still reading and not on vacation?

Basically it says, "In one week, Honolulu to Kauai to Los Angeles to Las Vegas to Los Angeles to Honolulu".

Wat does all dat mean?

'Das right.... *singing* I'm leeeaving, on a jet plane. I don't know when I'll be back again. *pau sing*

So for the past month, Da Wife kept hinting (ok, straight out saying) she needed a vacation. She's been getting frustrated at work because of certain incorrigible people and when she's not happy, I'm not happy.... iykwim. 😉

Originally we had decided to do a "staycation" being that I had a few vacation days left and trying to pick which neighbor island to go to was a big decision. SupahFerry? Kaua'i? Moloka'i? Big Island?

Then being da good husband dat I am 😉 I figgah, "eh, try check 'da oddah rock'" jus' out of curiosity and waddah ya know..... boo-yah!

Airfare to Los Angeles........... *drumroll*.............. only $207.............. ROUNDTRIP!!!!

Holy canole! That was just as much as we were about to spend for airfare to the neighbor island!

Wassap Wit Dat!

So I talk to my boss, get the ok. Check. Da Wife talks to her boss, gets da ok. Check.

She was full of excitement and of course aftah she floated back down to Earth, I told her dat would be her birthday and our Christmas present to each oddah....

Happy Birthday and Merry Christmas Babe! 😀

Now that the trip is in stone (barring any flight delays *knock on wood*), we're trying to figure out the last minute itinerary.

In LA, we going Disneyland (cause she wanted to see it decorated in Christmas) and Six Flags Magic Mountain (of course!) - no doubt! Then we have one "free day" before we drive up to Vegas (yeah, you read it correctly... drive up.... and back).

And dat's wea you guys come in (feel free to join in Lurkahs)..... Wat we going do?

I wanna hear ALL your suggestions for places to see, foods to try, outlet malls to stimulate the economy, tips, secrets..... watevahs! I going try check 'em out and report back daily. In my first travel blog back in da day, I only heard about things to do AFTAH we came back.... lose money.

I've already been trying to win tickets on eBay for admission to the parks.... no luck. Any CA peeps out there wanna help a Braddah out? 😉

At least for a week, you can live through me (like da Travel Channel) and let's keep this blog entry going.

Maybe... jus' maybe I may do a Vlog.......

Nah, too much work...... I stay on vacation. 😀

Go to the Getty Museum if you want a shot of culture. I used to take my dates there so they'd think I'm all artsy. Well, I was then. Now I'm just a dumb guy. Oh, I have a good nc-17 story about the Getty Museum. Hey, they also eat raw fish in California (catch my drift, BL)

  4. Coconut Willy:

Check out citypass http://www.citypass.com/ or http://www.citypass.com/attraction/disneyland/next.html

There was another one I used for San Diego I think it was called "Big Fun" but can't find it on the web.

For a cheap meal check out Soup Plantation. I think 10 bucks gets you all the salad, soup, pasta, dessert, and more!

  5. snow:

opso - yup, that's the place... but i've never seen one (celebrity) there! but still ono anyway!

  6. snow:

BL - Johnny's isn't in South Coast Plaza, it's a stand alone drive-in type place, but I'm not sure how far it is from Anaheim (we always go there after stopping at a bunch of places). This is the one I've been to (I guess I'm spelling the name wrong!) - but if you do a search on it, I think there might be a couple of others. I did a direction search thingie and it said it was about 43 minutes from Disneyland.

    Johnnie's Pastrami
    4017 Sepulveda Blvd
    Culver City, CA 90230

  7. Masako:

Ohh Disneyland! I love that place. I would suggest spending some time at California Adventure too. The rides there are different and more intense than the ones at Disneyland. The Tower of Terror is one of my favorite rides. Soaring is amazing.
Snow mentioned many of the stuff I enjoyed in LA and Vegas. I really liked the outlets on Barstow (got one In and Out over there) and Primm. Lawrys prime rib is the bomb! M and I rode the gondolas at the Venetion on our first trip to Vegas, it was so romantic!!!!! There is a Korea town out on Spring Mountain Road where we went to a Korean store and had dinner at a Korean restaurant. I also like to shop at the store in the Plaza hotel, they get good stuff to bring back for Omiyage. Ohh you guys going have so much fun! Enjoy!

  8. Masako:

If you want to play in the snow you can check if its snowing up at Mt Charleston. When we took the kids to Vegas we drove up there. Red Rock canyon is nice too. Oh and theres Red Rock canyon hotel, the oyster bar there looks good.

  9. King Katonk:

    Snow,
You are right on the money with Johnnies. It's about 10 minutes north of LAX and is open 24 hours. Back in the day when I was a working musician that was place for a late night meal. The best pastrami sandwich in all of L.A. I frequent "The Hat" only because they have multiple locations. The building itself is kind of old; with a real 50s feel to the place with jukeboxes on each booth. The dining patios also have outdoor firepits, way before they became fashionable. If you are anywhere near LAX you must make a stop at Johnnies; it's right off the 405 freeway.

Oh and another thing. I don't believe that they take credit cards. Cash only.

But once again, good food...bad cholesterol.

  10. islandgirl in nc:

I'm late checking in 'cause the in-laws stay in town, but I just wanted to say that I hope you have a great time! After living in LV for almost 10 years and going on frequent trips to the LA area, my suggestions are:

In LA... if you have time, go to Santa Monica boardwalk. My husband and I loved riding the huge ferris wheel which goes right over the ocean. Also, I can recommend Johnnies as well. Yummy pastrami and pickles! We also go to this place called Tito's Tacos (11222 Washington Place, Culver City, CA) - cheap and yummy. I love the salsa. Of course, go to Little Tokyo, Koreatown, etc. Good food pretty much anywhere, I think. Sorry I no can give specifics.

In LV... In and Out Burger definitely. The buffet at Green Valley Ranch was awesome when I was living there. This was 4-5 years ago. Great crab legs, shrimp, prime rib and salmon! My memory of Vegas fading fast since I haven't been there from the time I left. It's sad, but there are so many good places to go eat and places to see. Oh, yeah, the Ethel M's Chocolate Factory... free chocolate at the end of the short tour. There is also an awesome desert garden outside that is cool to see at night. During the holidays, the cactus has lights strung up on it. Romantic walking through the the Mrs (wink-wink).

Anyways, have lots of fun and enjoy your time together! BTW, have a fun turkey day as well as all the folks here!

  11. uncle jimmy:

    BL:
Dis DIS plus MM plan only makes any sense if you stay near both, or yo' in fo' one 2+hour commute between the two.. 'free day?'.. there's really nothing to see very near either DIS or MM, so you're in for another day of lots of driving.. gee freakin' whiz, bruddah..

not to shi-shi on dis parade, BL.. but sounds to me like yo' eyes are way mo' biggah den yo' driving stamina..

And what day are you planning on driving to LV, try hope not on a travel day, aka any Friday or pre-holiday day.. used to drive vegas 3-4 times a year for 10 years.. da problem is dat people on da mainlan' are crazy, drunk or on drugs, drive way too fas', are determined to die on da road, and dey like take you wit'.. hoooo-eeeee... nevah try go on a busy day..

seriously, brah, you need to run dis plan in detail by some mainlan' peeps befo you blow yo'self up on da kine freeway system.. you do know dat people drive 80 up heah all da time, right? i sked, BL..

oh, an' da outlet mall you want is on da way to vegas, it's called Tanger on Lenwood Road..

here's da map an' links to all da SoCal factory outlets..

  16. Masako:

Just thought of another fun thing in Vegas. The roller coaster at NewYork NewYork. I cannot remember the name of it off hand but it was fun! There is a scarier one at Buffalo Bills in Primm but I haven't tried it out.

  18. HNL2LAS:

Hey BL: Of course I could decipher it! bahaha... in fact for a moment there I was like, wow.. did my name get on steroids or something??? Bahha....

I'm so J you guys gonna go Disneyland! Das my favorite place to be other than DisneyWorld... and LV hehe... If you and da wife planning on buying Disney stuff for people, remember that there is a Disney outlet in Fullerton, a Disney Character outlet store (parks) in Vegas at the old Belz, and a Disney (store) outlet at the downtown outlets off Charleston.

I agree with some of the previous comments for LV: Fry's Electronics! OH YAH! If you miss Pink's hot dogs in LA, you get one more chance at Planet Hollywood Casino, where you may want to see Stomp Out Loud, there are a couple of local peeps in the show and it ends soon..... I'm really bummed I won't be able to see it, especially if get Hawaii peeps inside!! Mt. Charleston, I'm sure must have some snow by now.I definitely second islandgirl in nc about Ethel M's chocolate! Very pretty for the holidays and da free chocolate! hehe... sometimes there is even entertainment in the garden too (besides da pretty, twinkin' lights!)

  19. HNL2LAS:

WHAT??? Awaiting moderation???? What'd I say!

Uncle Ynaku: thanks for the link to the video! FUUUUUNNNNYY Stuff!

BL: brudda you looked so small next to the Tundra, and the "David and Goliath" truck too! Too funny you!

The second site has coupons that I used the other week to save me some money, so I could gamble and shop instead heehee....

By the way, ohhhh good eye on the plane tickets! The cheapest I had found was $243 to LAX, ohhhh you got a better deal! whooo hooo!

  21. HNL2LAS:

Ho, relax uncle jimmy. I know wat it's like... I too have done da drive SEVERAL times. I know da drive times, da "speed", wen to go, wen not to go etc. I've even done da drive from Vegas to Utah jus' to go snowboarding. And while most Hawaii people don't drive for more than an hour in any direction, I've also done the "Circle Island" drive on da Big Island. Ynaku can verify dat it isn't easy. 😉 Mahalos fo' sharing your concern though.

  26. lovelyhanalei:

hope you have a very nice trip! I live in las vegas so a few of my suggestions would be: for shopping skip the outlet malls and use your limited time for places you can only see in Vegas, such as The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace. For places to eat, again take advantage of one of the things Vegas does best, Buffets. with each hotel trying to top the other this is by far your best bet. the Rio, the Wynn, & Bellagio are some of the best to name only a few. As far as what to see, I would say stay on the strip and forget about "downtown" it's old and dreary. to get a little taste of it all on the strip, you can't beat just simply walking the strip, or taking the free shuttles that go up & down the strip. Some unique things to do when you are there are : seeing Siegfried & Roy's secret garden and dolphin habitat. this is a lush setting where you can see the famous white tigers and other exotic animals from Siegfried & Roys former show about $15.You can take a beautiful Gondola ride at the Venetian Hotel, The Rio Hotel has a free hourly show in the evenings where you can watch elaborate party floats glide by in the sky above the casino floor. for about $12 you can ride one along with the actors & dancers. At the Tropicana Hotel you can take a backstage tour of the Jubilee! show. one of the showgirls conducts a tour that shows what it is like behind th scenes, the stage sets, costumes, dressing rooms.. and one last thing, just a heads up, when visiting Magic Mountain, from Dec 1st thru Dec 31st the freeway off ramp on I-5 will be closed for construction so you my want to call the hotline ( 661-290-2297 ) for alternate driving directions.

Much mahalos fo' dat tip! I'll be sure to look into dat before we start our drive. Do they still do construction on Saturdays though?

  29. zzzzzz:

If you really like go Fry's, you can do that in LA too, so you have more time for LV stuff in LV.

You could easily spend a 2nd day at Disneyland, and a 3rd, especially if you have the pass that gets you into there or Califormia Adventure.

BTW, cannot resist: I think the word you meant to type is, "incorrigible."

  32. snow:

BL- There's a new outdoor shopping area in Vegas - it's called Town Square. It's south of Mandalay Bay - I really liked it, though it wasn't finished when I went - there were some nice shops there, but it's not your typical mall (it's like you're in a little town, really!). There's a Claim Jumper restaurant there (lots of food and it's usually pretty yummy!) and, better yet, there's a Fry's close by! You could let your wife shop while you went to Fry's (that's what we did!)!

  33. Braddah Lance:

    snow:

I seen dat too back in Feb but it was empty... maybe it wasn't open yet and yeah, it did look like a little "town". Claim Jumpers? I've heard of dat... is it good?

  34. HNL2LAS:

Claim Jumper! YUMZ! Ya gotta save room for the chocolate motherlode cake, 6 layers of chocolate goodness!

Yah the Disney Outlets are cooool... I always find stuff there, hehe.. but then again I'm a Disney Freak! BUT, it is an outlet so if you want something "New", like Christmas '08 stuff, maybe buy it at the park anyway. Charleston's Disney store outlet is smaller than the old Belz warehouse one but you can find some stuff you'd find in the "regular" store sometimes. Haven't been to the Fullerton one, so I have no idea what it looks like, but it is the same "company" as the Belz one. OH! And if you do happen to go to both the Fullerton one and the Belz one, pick up the coupon by the register if they have it. LV store has the Fullerton coupon and my cuz says the Fullerton one has the LV coupon! Save more Kala for the gamblin'!!

  35. snow:

okie... HNL2LAS just made me realllly confused... !! but claim jumpers has yummy food! that cake that HNL2LAS mentioned is huge!! i'd definitely go there again (i'd been to a couple in CA before the LV one).

have a great trip BL and Da Wife!!

  36. HNL2LAS:

Hahah.. Snow... I guess it was confusing huh?? It made sense to me...hee heee.... . OH well.... hopefully it will be helpful... somehow....
