Were you able to decipher that for those who are still reading and not on vacation?

Basically it says, "In one week, Honolulu to Kauai to Los Angeles to Las Vegas to Los Angeles to Honolulu".

Wat does all dat mean?

'Das right.... *singing* I'm leeeaving, on a jet plane. I don't know when I'll be back again. *pau sing*

So for the past month, Da Wife kept hinting (ok, straight out saying) she needed a vacation. She's been getting frustrated at work because of certain incorrigible people and when she's not happy, I'm not happy.... iykwim.

Originally we had decided to do a "staycation" being that I had a few vacation days left and trying to pick which neighbor island to go to was a big decision. SupahFerry? Kaua'i? Moloka'i? Big Island?

Then being da good husband dat I am  I figgah, "eh, try check 'da oddah rock'" jus' out of curiosity and waddah ya know..... boo-yah!

Airfare to Los Angeles........... *drumroll*.............. only $207.............. ROUNDTRIP!!!!

Holy canole! That was just as much as we were about to spend for airfare to the neighbor island!

Wassap Wit Dat!

So I talk to my boss, get the ok. Check. Da Wife talks to her boss, gets da ok. Check.

She was full of excitement and of course aftah she floated back down to Earth, I told her dat would be her birthday and our Christmas present to each oddah....

Happy Birthday and Merry Christmas Babe!

Now that the trip is in stone (barring any flight delays *knock on wood*), we're trying to figure out the last minute itinerary.

In LA, we going Disneyland (cause she wanted to see it decorated in Christmas) and Six Flags Magic Mountain (of course!) - no doubt! Then we have one "free day" before we drive up to Vegas (yeah, you read it correctly... drive up.... and back).

And dat's wea you guys come in (feel free to join in Lurkahs)..... Wat we going do?

I wanna hear ALL your suggestions for places to see, foods to try, outlet malls to stimulate the economy, tips, secrets..... watevahs! I going try check 'em out and report back daily. In my first travel blog back in da day, I only heard about things to do AFTAH we came back.... lose money.

I've already been trying to win tickets on eBay for admission to the parks.... no luck. Any CA peeps out there wanna help a Braddah out?

At least for a week, you can live through me (like da Travel Channel) and let's keep this blog entry going.

Maybe... jus' maybe I may do a Vlog.......

Nah, too much work...... I stay on vacation.

    Vacation! Chee-hoo!

Hope it's a good one! Good job, keep Da Wife happy! :D

I wish I could give you some pointers, but I've never been to Disneyland. :(
I can hide in your suitcase?

Been a while since I've been to Vegas too - must be totally different.

  9. munch:

YAY! a well-deserved vacation for your Wife!! oh...you too BL :-P

i'd be no help with the travelling, places to go, things to see...since ya know, i've pretty much spent every single day of my life (minus about 3 weeks) on this rock...or at least in this state! but do have lots and lots of fun!!! and i second L please make sure 1-1 is somewhere doggy-proof so she can't escape and have a vacation of her own

when i first saw da title, i kept thinking "it says HNL2LAS but parts look funny..." hahaha

oh and i'm sure you're gonna be working on Black Friday so i keep you company!

  10. M:

Have a GREAT time on your vacation BL and Teri both of you deserve it. I really don't have any suggestions for you because I don't travel to those places that much, just let loose and have fun!!! By the way, you scored to the airline tickets!

    HAVE A HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!

  11. bamboohouse808:

On Kauai, go stop off at Duane's Ono Char Burger in Anahola. It's a hole in the wall right off the road, if you blink, you'll miss it. I get the teriyaki mushroom burger and the fries you put your own red salt stuff on top. That buggah is winnahs!! If you like eat steak, go Bullshed in Waipouli. Right across the street from Foodland. Go snorkel at the end of the road at Kee Beach.

I don't know much about LA. Just the usual tourist stuff.

Vegas get the 2 outlet malls. Go eat dinner or dessert at the restaurant at the top of the Stratosphere. Nice views from up there. Not that cheap though. Go play golf at the Callaway Executive course. I think it's still there. Just rent clubs from them. I dunno what you guys like do. Vegas get anykine stuffs!!

  12. AC:

BL...have fun! How'd you score the airfare deal though? Care to share your secrets?

  13. Ynaku:

Hey Mrs. BL! If you lurking, just wanted to wish you and your hubby a happy thanksgiving and to enjoy your well deserved vacation. Hope to meet you one day.

Now where's dat dang SuperFerry stay? I stay hea on Hilo and getting cold in da rain.

OK Ynaku trying fo be nice and to see if we can get WWD way up there with the big blog boys (and girls)

  14. Kelli:

I'm jealous. I want to go to Disneyland, too. :-P I'm going be all habut for the rest of the day now. Well, never mind. It's Wednesday and get one long weekend. :-) It would be even better if I didn't have to write a darn research paper, but no can have everything, right?

  15. Owek:

Go for it. You and wife have fun and forget the hustle and buzzle here @ home. A little R&R will do you both good. Disneyland is very crowded this time of the year. When you're in Vegas, check out the bellagio and it's decor. It's a sight to see itself.

E Komo Mai Rod's Big Bro to WWD! Yeah, gotta check out Costco to see how much it is but so far, eBay is da cheapest... almost 2 for 1 kine deals... I no tink Costco can beat dat.

And mahalo's fo' da gift card tip! We had dat blog a couple weeks ago but it doesn't hurt reminding peeps. Mahalos!

    AC:
BL…have fun! How’d you score the airfare deal though? Care to share your secrets?

No secrets really. I jus' hear on da radio, news etc and 'den look 'em up on Orbitz. Airfare "usually" cheaper wen you look on Mon & Tues so if you buying, look then. Of course, redeyes and late flights are generally the rule for cheap flights. Sights like farecompare.com get "stats" of history and kayak.com.

But wat I do too is search fares on Orbitz and 'den book direct with da airline cause you save on da "processing fees".

Dat's dat... in a coconut shell.

  17. BananaFysh:

For realz BL - I never been to Disneyland. :(

I will gladly accept your sponsorship though. ;)

Dat's some unreal cheap fares. Practically free! I got a email from Priceline the other day, and had RT fares to LA for just over $300, and I thought that was a smoking deal! Dang! Score! :D Mo' $$$ in your pocket for Vegas, baby! :D

  18. munch:

Is dat a hint fo’ your future boyfriend?

it's a "please can we take another trip???" for my current bf  actually i'm relatively easy to please...just take me to a nice hotel in waikiki & spend the weekend away from the normal hustle & bustle...that works too! :-D

  19. B:

    Hey BL,
Make sure you check the Bellagio, been there to see their New Years, Chinese New Years, Summer, Thanksgiving, and Christmas displays and it's the best in the west. Make sure you have at least a wind breaker, gets a little chilly, but shorts and polo/aloha shirt can still get you by. Good luck and have fun on your vacation.

  22. bamboohouse808:

I wish I could…. Da Wife no play.

BL - I guess you going be doing a lot of shopping in Vegas.

Go drop off the wife at the outlet mall and go drive over to Fry's Electronics. They get some mean deals sometimes.

I'll "baby"sit OneOne if you want...my little doggie could use the company!

  26. anklebiters:

    BL:

Go 1st class all the way :-)

As for tickets, Fry's supermarket here sold discounted all day pass to Six Flags. The kids an I use to get there when they opened and stay till it closed at night. Disneyland is tough getting a discount, AAA is one....try a hotel/park package at the Disneyland Hotel?

The drive to Vegas is not bad...did that many times from Moreno Valley. There is a big Outlet stores in Barstow on the way to Vegas :-)

Be sure to take the gondola ride at the Venetian and take the trip to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Watching the water fountain show in front of the Bellagio is always nice. If you have time, make it over to the Green Valley Ranch (remember the reality show Amercian Casino?) , nice hotel/casino.

I'm sure you and your wife will find lots of things to do and see in Vegas. When are you going to be there?

  27. bamboohouse808:

hsib - Fry's is da bomb!! I been to the one in Phoenix. Kinda funny because besides electronics, Fry's owns supermarkets. WWD!

And I DO have a supah cute cousin named Dawn. (of course, I no think about her like that. das oogee!!) No make me bust out da Ocean Lover Interrogation Questions!!

  28. Ynaku:

Whoa BH808, us uncle better stand in line for issue da questions.

OK hsib, what's your intention with Miss Dawn? :D

  29. snow:

Yay! Glad you and Da Wife are going to go on vacation!!! :) Should be fun! I love Disneyland, it's one of my favorite places to go! When we lived in CA, we went to Disneyland every Christmas morning - so hard to open all your presents (even though you want to!) when you know that the longer you take, the less time you have at Disneyland!!

At Disneyland, the shops usually stay open longer than the park, so you should still have time to shop after the park is "closed" (i.e., you can't ride, but you can shop!) and the Disney store in Downtown Disney stays open even later, so you can usually still check them out after even the park shops have closed.

Anyway, I always like to go to Universal Studios, too. Or, if you want to go shopping, South Coast Plaza is kind of close and it's huge! For food, if you drive by an In-and-Out Burger, you should check it out, if you haven't yet. Johnny's Pastrami and Pink's Hot Dogs are great too! If you want to go somewhere nice, there's a Lawry's The Prime Rib (the best!) and a Crustacean's (Roasted Crab is awesome - original restaurant in San Francisco) in Beverly Hills (oh, but dis not t-shirt and shorts kine place, BL!).

On the way to Las Vegas, there are good outlet malls in Barstow and Primm... good places to stretch your legs after you've been in the car a long time, too!

If I think of anything else... I'll let you know! You and Da Wife have a great time and a happy Thanksgiving!!

  30. opso:

auright BL! you folks going on vacation! chee hoo!
ho.....i stay reeeealy jelled now. but yeah.....you and Da Wife deserve it! :D

you folks wen check out da oddah touristy places like Universal Studios or Knott's Berry Farm yet? if not.....go check em out.....go.....go check em go.

    oh yeah.....Happpy Thanksgiving everybody!! :D

  31. snow:

Oh! Make sure you get your FastPass for the popular rides at Disneyland! Not sure how crowded it will be but those cut down on a lot of waiting time!

  32. anklebiters:

    BL:

Oh, like HSIB says........FRY's Electronics...and the golf shop west of the airport.

Oh, another thing...coming into the outskirts of Vegas, the first casino has a neat roller coaster ride.

  33. BananaFysh:

How could I forget about Fry's! I lurve that store!

Whenever I go Seattle, I go to the one in Renton. Kick. Ass. :D

I can spend hours in there. My wife no can handle. Too geeky, I guess. Whatevahs.

  34. honda si boy:

bh808: waaait, she went to UCLA too? no no, nothing li'dat, she's little older than me but i remember when i was an undergrad there, she was in grad school. i really thought she looked like tamilyn tomita and she was my FAVORITE actress. :) it was one of those, you know, puppy dog crushes :) hahahaha. damn. i still can't believe ralph macchio got to hang out with her. blah!

ynaku: hahaha, oh oh, is this a "meet the parents" moment?

  35. honda si boy:

  36. opso:

Woooohoooo! Vicarious vacation! If I no can go, I glad you can!

Two free things in Vegas - water show in front of Bellagio (like Anklebiters already mentioned) and the light show on the ceiling of Fremont Street. Buffet at Flamingo's is ono and cheap. I've had friends who have gone to the Cirque du Soleil shows (hexxxxxpensive) but they were good. If you wander around California Hotel, garans you goin' see somebody you know.

If get time on Kauai, go check out Lawai Mini Mart fo' da mos' ono manju EVER. Get da regular kind with an inside, but get apple and all kine other flavors too. My favorite one is da apple.

Travel safely! Take planny pix to share wit dose of us who used up all their 2008 vacation time arready!

  49. King Katonk:

    BL and Mrs. BL,

Good to hear that you’re coming out to the mainland. I hope you and your wife have a wonderful trip. Personally, I have lived in SoCal for about 10 years, but I still miss the S.F. Bay Area.

The first thing to remember when driving in L.A…”The freeway is your friend.” What I mean is that no matter how bad traffic gets don’t try and take an alternate route via side streets. Unless you are familiar with the territory you may find yourself in an undesirable neighborhood by accident. Not a good thing.

As far as my selections go I’ll try and keep it brief.

Nethercutt Museum – on the way up to Magic Mountain you must stop by this museum; even if it’s for an hour. The place is located in an industrial part of Sylmar (think Mapunapuna) and in the smack in the middle is this impressive collection of classic automobiles – better than Vegas. The Nethercutt is so obscure that even the locals don’t know about it. They are open Tues. – Sat. 9am to 4:30pm. Here’s the best part BL…it’s free admission. http://www.nethercuttcollection.org/

Gamble House - If you or your wife is into classic American architecture check out the Gamble House near the Rose Bowl. This house was designed by Greene and Greene the creators of the Craftsman style home. I think the tour is about $10 per person. http://www.gamblehouse.org/index.html

Old Town Pasadena is a great place to shop and eat. They restored this onetime desolate area into a pleasant outdoor experience. There are a variety of shops and restaurants along Colorado Avenue– it’s like a mall that has been spread out over several city blocks. If you do park there may I suggest the public lot on Green Street between Fair Oaks and Raymond Streets. The rates are very reasonable. BTW – I think Roy’s opened up a location nearby. http://www.pasadenacal.com/oldpas.htm

If you do insist on shopping try to go to The Grove (not Anaheim) in the Fairfax district of L.A. This shopping center fused the old Farmer’s Market with a new retail component. The guy who developed this project is Rick Caruso, whom I’ve personally met. He creates shopping centers that are so unique; it kind of makes you feel you’re in Disneyland. http://www.carusoaffiliated.com/

Speaking of Disneyland, I used to have an annual pass and I would take the family at least once, maybe twice a month. IMHO California Adventure is not worth the extra money. The only attractions worth seeing there are “Soaring Over California” and the “Aladdin Musical Show.” The rest of the rides are pretty generic. In fact, Disney just announced that they are going to invest $1 billion dollars to overhaul that park. If I were you I would save the extra $25 bucks and just pay for the Disneyland admission. With the extra money you and the wife can have a nice dinner. Sorry, I used to have a connection that could get folks into “Club 33” but no more. That would have been a great romantic dinner for you newlyweds.

    Famous local dive restaurants…

Fatburger (owned by Magic Johnson) – order a King Egg Chili Cheese Burger and try to eat it with no napkins.

The Hat – Great pastrami sandwiches. Good food, bad cholesterol.

Tommy’s Original World Famous Hamburgers – They are spread out all over the Southland but if you want to get a taste of hard core Los Angeles dining then you must go to the original location on Beverly and Rampart. The parking is sometimes tough, although there is a secondary lot across the street, and the crowd is eclectic to say the least. Tommy’s serves the classic chili burger. Mind you, there are no sit down tables just a long outdoor counter that runs along the perimeter of the parking lot. It’s kind of close to Koreatown. I would recommend going for lunch; anytime after dark the clientele gets pretty tough.

And of course In-and-Out – remember to order off the secret menu. My favorite is a cheeseburger animal style (patty cooked in mustard with extra pickles and sauce.)

Sorry for the long post. If I think of other stuff I’ll let you know.

    Have a great Thanksgiving.

BL - Johnny's isn't in South Coast Plaza, it's a stand alone drive-in type place, but I'm not sure how far it is from Anaheim (we always go there after stopping at a bunch of places). This is the one I've been to (I guess I'm spelling the name wrong!) - but if you do a search on it, I think there might be a couple of others. I did a direction search thingie and it said it was about 43 minutes from Disneyland.

  57. Masako:

Ohh Disneyland! I love that place. I would suggest spending some time at California Adventure too. The rides there are different and more intense than the ones at Disneyland. The Tower of Terror is one of my favorite rides. Soaring is amazing.
Snow mentioned many of the stuff I enjoyed in LA and Vegas. I really liked the outlets on Barstow (got one In and Out over there) and Primm. Lawrys prime rib is the bomb! M and I rode the gondolas at the Venetion on our first trip to Vegas, it was so romantic!!!!! There is a Korea town out on Spring Mountain Road where we went to a Korean store and had dinner at a Korean restaurant. I also like to shop at the store in the Plaza hotel, they get good stuff to bring back for Omiyage. Ohh you guys going have so much fun! Enjoy!

  58. Masako:

If you want to play in the snow you can check if its snowing up at Mt Charleston. When we took the kids to Vegas we drove up there. Red Rock canyon is nice too. Oh and theres Red Rock canyon hotel, the oyster bar there looks good.

  59. King Katonk:

    Snow,
You are right on the money with Johnnies. It's about 10 minutes north of LAX and is open 24 hours. Back in the day when I was a working musician that was place for a late night meal. The best pastrami sandwich in all of L.A. I frequent "The Hat" only because they have multiple locations. The building itself is kind of old; with a real 50s feel to the place with jukeboxes on each booth. The dining patios also have outdoor firepits, way before they became fashionable. If you are anywhere near LAX you must make a stop at Johnnies; it's right off the 405 freeway.

Oh and another thing. I don't believe that they take credit cards. Cash only.

But once again, good food...bad cholesterol.

  60. islandgirl in nc:

I'm late checking in 'cause the in-laws stay in town, but I just wanted to say that I hope you have a great time! After living in LV for almost 10 years and going on frequent trips to the LA area, my suggestions are:

In LA... if you have time, go to Santa Monica boardwalk. My husband and I loved riding the huge ferris wheel which goes right over the ocean. Also, I can recommend Johnnies as well. Yummy pastrami and pickles! We also go to this place called Tito's Tacos (11222 Washington Place, Culver City, CA) - cheap and yummy. I love the salsa. Of course, go to Little Tokyo, Koreatown, etc. Good food pretty much anywhere, I think. Sorry I no can give specifics.

In LV... In and Out Burger definitely. The buffet at Green Valley Ranch was awesome when I was living there. This was 4-5 years ago. Great crab legs, shrimp, prime rib and salmon! My memory of Vegas fading fast since I haven't been there from the time I left. It's sad, but there are so many good places to go eat and places to see. Oh, yeah, the Ethel M's Chocolate Factory... free chocolate at the end of the short tour. There is also an awesome desert garden outside that is cool to see at night. During the holidays, the cactus has lights strung up on it. Romantic walking through the the Mrs (wink-wink).

Anyways, have lots of fun and enjoy your time together! BTW, have a fun turkey day as well as all the folks here!

I'm so J you guys gonna go Disneyland! Das my favorite place to be other than DisneyWorld... and LV hehe... If you and da wife planning on buying Disney stuff for people, remember that there is a Disney outlet in Fullerton, a Disney Character outlet store (parks) in Vegas at the old Belz, and a Disney (store) outlet at the downtown outlets off Charleston.

I agree with some of the previous comments for LV: Fry's Electronics! OH YAH! If you miss Pink's hot dogs in LA, you get one more chance at Planet Hollywood Casino, where you may want to see Stomp Out Loud, there are a couple of local peeps in the show and it ends soon..... I'm really bummed I won't be able to see it, especially if get Hawaii peeps inside!! Mt. Charleston, I'm sure must have some snow by now.I definitely second islandgirl in nc about Ethel M's chocolate! Very pretty for the holidays and da free chocolate! hehe... sometimes there is even entertainment in the garden too (besides da pretty, twinkin' lights!)

hope you have a very nice trip! I live in las vegas so a few of my suggestions would be: for shopping skip the outlet malls and use your limited time for places you can only see in Vegas, such as The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace. For places to eat, again take advantage of one of the things Vegas does best, Buffets. with each hotel trying to top the other this is by far your best bet. the Rio, the Wynn, & Bellagio are some of the best to name only a few. As far as what to see, I would say stay on the strip and forget about "downtown" it's old and dreary. to get a little taste of it all on the strip, you can't beat just simply walking the strip, or taking the free shuttles that go up & down the strip. Some unique things to do when you are there are : seeing Siegfried & Roy's secret garden and dolphin habitat. this is a lush setting where you can see the famous white tigers and other exotic animals from Siegfried & Roys former show about $15.You can take a beautiful Gondola ride at the Venetian Hotel, The Rio Hotel has a free hourly show in the evenings where you can watch elaborate party floats glide by in the sky above the casino floor. for about $12 you can ride one along with the actors & dancers. At the Tropicana Hotel you can take a backstage tour of the Jubilee! show. one of the showgirls conducts a tour that shows what it is like behind th scenes, the stage sets, costumes, dressing rooms.. and one last thing, just a heads up, when visiting Magic Mountain, from Dec 1st thru Dec 31st the freeway off ramp on I-5 will be closed for construction so you my want to call the hotline ( 661-290-2297 ) for alternate driving directions.

If you really like go Fry's, you can do that in LA too, so you have more time for LV stuff in LV.

You could easily spend a 2nd day at Disneyland, and a 3rd, especially if you have the pass that gets you into there or Califormia Adventure.

BTW, cannot resist: I think the word you meant to type is, "incorrigible."

BL- There's a new outdoor shopping area in Vegas - it's called Town Square. It's south of Mandalay Bay - I really liked it, though it wasn't finished when I went - there were some nice shops there, but it's not your typical mall (it's like you're in a little town, really!). There's a Claim Jumper restaurant there (lots of food and it's usually pretty yummy!) and, better yet, there's a Fry's close by! You could let your wife shop while you went to Fry's (that's what we did!)!

Yah the Disney Outlets are cooool... I always find stuff there, hehe.. but then again I'm a Disney Freak! BUT, it is an outlet so if you want something "New", like Christmas '08 stuff, maybe buy it at the park anyway. Charleston's Disney store outlet is smaller than the old Belz warehouse one but you can find some stuff you'd find in the "regular" store sometimes. Haven't been to the Fullerton one, so I have no idea what it looks like, but it is the same "company" as the Belz one. OH! And if you do happen to go to both the Fullerton one and the Belz one, pick up the coupon by the register if they have it. LV store has the Fullerton coupon and my cuz says the Fullerton one has the LV coupon! Save more Kala for the gamblin'!!
