Wat? Hawai'i No Can Handle?

March 11th, 2009
By Braddah Lance

In case you missed it, Saturday Night Live (SNL) aired a skit about..... Hawaii.

CLICK HEA' FO' SEE 'EM  -  You gotta see it!

And it put Lt.Governor Duke Aiona, along with vistior industry officials, in an uproar.... c'mon, you sound like you're running for Governor.

In yesterday's article by Peter Boylan (click here to read the article), "Visitor industry officials said the skit is tasteless and offensive, coming at a time when Hawai'i's tourism industry is suffering from declining arrivals."

C'mon, were you watching da show? It's Saturday Night Live...... a comedic satire about society! SNL is about spoofs and teasing.... dat's the backbone of their show. If you evah watched a SNL skit you'd know they do it ALL IN FUN. We make fun of da mainland all da time so we bettah be able to take it if we're dishing it as well and fo' realz.... isn't a joke kinda like telling da truth... but only funnier?

If we (Hawai'i) no can handle, then I tink I gotta move cause Hawai'i is supposed to be "different". We have more compassion, more forgiveness.... more Aloha.

Locals tease locals but wen da East Coast decides to put their spin on it - on a comedy show no less - it can't be funny? Plus, they did it because of "The Rock's" short, but heart heavy, roots back to da Aloha State. To tell you da truth, I'd probably be tiffed if a haole with no ties to Hawai'i was doing it but does that make it ok since The Rock was doing it?

As long as it was funny!

Am I offended about the "words"? HECK YEAH! But at da same time, think about it.... you're watching Saturday Night Live.... you expect anything different? You're not watching CNN or primetime news. You're watching a comedy show for crying out loud.

Wat about Rap Riplinger's skits? Those were damn funny! And it was locals teasing locals.... wat if Saturday Night Live did da exact same skits? Would there be such an uproar? If visitors saw that, wat would they tink? I tell ya wat they'd think - Kama'aina are uneducated puka shirt wearing grass hut living surf everyday moke's!

Wat about all da oddah SNL skits teasing da President and such. Seriously, THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES! You don't go there...... but SNL does AND da skits get more outrageous during election season. If Bill Clinton himself can go on da show and tease his wife or Sarah Palin can..... uh, we won't go there but it was funny.

Is wat da skit "depicted" actually true? Probably to some extent but wat state isn't immune to ALL those scenarios?

People come to Hawaii for one thing and one thing only....... FUN IN THE SUN! They come here for lazy afternoons getting sun burnt sipping mai tai's, going on hikes to waterfalls, watching a "commericalized" luau, ooooh'ing and ahhhh'ing big surf, getting pounded by little surf,  "trying" poi... unless Hawaii turns into a "ghetto" (and if we let it), it's not going to change the perception from a spoof on SNL?!

Shouldn't we be worring about our budget shortfalls and the raises - wait, only the government is got raises so you're not worried about that - and homelessness and taxes and da oddah ukumillion problems we got back hea'.

You wanna talk about tourism? Why don't you help da kama'aina out and lower some prices? Don't you think kama'aina would love to stay - even for a night - at a good Waikiki Hotel for less than a $100? I bet you they would. Hotels and "visitor officials" complain about occupancy..... wouldn't they rather fill any rooms than none? You want a sure fire answer to tourism? Make it affordable. Don't believe me? Look at how much kama'aina flock to da mainland wen da price is right! We hear it ALL da time... "ho, Vegas was so cheap!" and "I can't believe airfare to LA was that low!".

Hawaii will be and will always perpetuate the "Aloha" as long as we carry it on. THAT's what makes Hawai'i, Hawai'i. The people.

You really think the millions of people that saw SNL will not come to Hawai'i because of that spoof? How many times have we (kama'aina) seen and heard about the murders in New York City or in Southern Cal? Or even the fact that Washington DC has the highest crime rate in the nation? And that's REAL LIFE! People still travel to those places in masses because of the significance each area holds... uh, jus' like Hawai'i no?

Spoof or no spoof, Hawai'i is no ka oi and it'll stay dat way as long as da people (kama'aina) keep it dat way!

Don't believe me? Hea's wat a visitor posted on tripadvisor.com about da skit:

I agree. We were not sure whether to laugh or be insulted for the people of Hawaii. There are some comments that I found offensive, like when he says about them all living in poverty. We are leaving in a few days for our 5th trip to Hawaii, and never have we found any one there to be rude or ungracious. In fact, most of them go out of their way to make sure our vacation is wonderful. In fact, we have made friends with some of them. Hawaii is a beautiful paradise, and that is what sent us there originally, but the real reason we keep going back is the people.

It's not stopping dat visitor.

I'm all in to keep perpetuating da TRUE Aloha spirit........ wat about you?

  3. B:

good points you make. gotta laugh at ourselves. kinda same ting wen Delima do all da portagee, pake, jap, samoan, etc. kine jokes. in da 70's an 80's everybody wen laugh, den came da 90's an 2000's now we take his jokes more seriously an criticize him. we get moa important stuff fo care about.

notice wen tings get tough in waikiki start fo get ads urging locals fo help support. wat happens wen times are good, no moa nothing.

I still no can understand how da legislators wen get raises and now get talk of raising taxes. how does dat work?

  5. Kage:

If anyone is so influenced by a skit on SNL, so be it. Come on! It is a SPOOF. I laughed at it. It was what many want to say to some people but usually keep it inside. This is the type of venue for that type of humor.

Tell you the truth, I would not have known about it if it was not for the media harping on it. That brings more attention to the subject more than just the skit.

  6. Ynaku:

Come on SNL makes fun of everything. You no like get insulted then no watch. We know Hawaii not really like that. Look at the gang last night, we all professional people but we act crazy in a good way. Gotta have fun but we not insulted when some people talk soo loud, no can hear. But we luv em anyway.

Still get da Aloha Spirit here.

  7. M:

    Good Morning BL! :)

You should be on SNL! You was sooo freaking funny last night I was crying from laughing sooooo hard!

SNL makes fun of everything and anything. Dat's wat dat sho iz about.

Thanks fo making time from yo beezy schedule and stopping by last night. It was choke fun!

  8. AC:

    I guess Aiona's just bored.

Like Cayetano said at a TV interview last week, the lowliest time of his political career was when he was Lt. Governor. Each morning all he had to worry about and ask was whether the Governor was still breathing.

    :-)

  9. islandgirl in nc:

Honestly, they think visitors or potential visitors are not smart enough to realize what is a joke. I did not see the skit myself. But I can tell you that there are people who believe these things. For example, I went on a trip to Washington, DC when I was still in high school (late 80s) where I spent time with other high school kids from around the country. We had an exercise where they had to draw about what we thought of each other's state. Yes, there were some students (smart ones at that) who asked if we lived in grass shacks on a beach and had electricity. Of course I told them we did not. Then I had a cousin who went with her husband (both from Hawaii) to Texas because her husband was doing his residency at a hospital there. She told me how disgusted she was at a BBQ with other doctor's wives when they asked her if they needed a passport to go to Hawaii! There was also the time when I was working as a reporter for a Kauai newspaper (early 90s) and someone called to say they were "calling from the United States." I politely informed them Hawaii was part of the U.S. There are people out there that believe these things but I have also met other people who tell me they love the islands, go there all the time, wouldn't mind living there, etc. A skit will not sway people from visiting Hawaii. Think about all those skits making fun of Midwesteners or Alaskan (during the election of Sarah Palin). Or how about skits about the English or Parisians? This is a case of Hawaii not being able to take a joke! Really sad if this is the only thing the Lt. Gov spends his time on.

  10. kako mochi:

so i finally watched the infamous skit last night and thought it was funny! i mean, i could hear the sarcasm in their tone of voice and thats exactly how i took it.

look at frank delima . . . he makes fun of everyone and that's how SNL is too - DUH! plus, i hate when people HAVE to say "i got lei'd!" after getting a lei from someone . . . i would dump drinks in their laps too!!

  11. M:

BL, how did your wife like your pretty lips last night?

  12. 9th Island Girl:

I saw the skit and my jaw dropped when I heard what da Rock was saying. The whole time I watched it, I was thinking, "HTA is going to s*** when they hear this!"

It was funny, and it was also pretty on target, mentioning the meth labs, etc.

  13. BuBu:

I agree. C'mon people - SNL makes fun of everybody and everything-it's comedy. Why we cannot laugh at ourselves anymore?

  14. Lulu:

I thought the skit was great...very tongue in cheek. Anyone who sees a skit on SNL and decides to not go someplace because of it, is crazy...not to mention their list of vacations spots would be very short.

I'm sure the people who work in hospitality will get asked about it constantly from tourists...and have a good time with it. Oops, sorry about that water glass! :)

  15. opso:

    rotflmao......dat skit was hilarious!

and yeah.....we all gotta take one chill pill and make shua we can laugh at ourselves too. get too much pc cr@p nowdays.

i heard dat da story bout Aiona's dissatisfaction with da SNL skit went national.......and now because of it.......da skit is one of da highest viewed vid for the week on hulu.com.

boy......talk about backfire! way da go Duke! :?

  16. uncle jimmy:

yeah, you know wut.. some things are lots of things all at the same time:

clueless, classless, rude.. goofy, spoofy, an' funny, too..

howevah, good t'ing dukey no mo speak fo erryone else, cuz if you can't laff at yerself, who you goin' laff at anywayz?

duke an' sharon w. and hta.. get a job, get a life, an' get a clue..

an' sharon's quote, "that's not pono".. is, in and of itself, not pono..

so wut randal, you can not handle? good catch an' spin, BL..

  17. buddahbelly:

I saw the skit on Saturday night and didn't have a problem with it, after all, anyone watching the show knows it's a spoof. Talk about Rap, the one skit he did that really pushed the envelope was the Funeral one with the stuttering reverend and cogregation.

  18. visitor:

Agree with OPSO #14, LG and Tourism Liaison...should have thought it out before making this such a public issue. Politically motivated , "soapbox" speeches often backfire. Not good Duke...

  19. kate:

The big diff between this skit and those by DeLima et al is the local comedy skits stay local. Someone from Ohio (potential tourist/money-bag) is not going to see DeLima but they saw the SNL skit. Mainland people are really ignorant about Hawaii so who knows what they're going believe?

When I was going to college on the mainland, I got asked all kind of questions. Need passport to go to Hawaii? Can I use American money in Hawaii? Really stupid questions like that.

I thought the skit was funny. Used to watch SNL all the time.

  20. Melissa:

Hello Lance! Was nice to meet you IRL. I just came by to let you know that I'll be posting the photos from last night on my blog tonight. I never knew that you were the World's Loudest Accountant!!!

  21. Tankobu:

You right on the money Braddah Lance! and I support your suggestion about giving us kamaaina some good price breaks to fill the void in the tourism spots - that makes great business sense.

That skit was really funny! The Rock is a funny guy; I like his facial expressions. and the song they sang was pretty damn good, not like other bogus kine. Whoever wrote the skit knows Hawaii pretty well; keenly accurate jokes.

  22. BananaFysh:

    Hui BL! Howzit!

Was good to meet up with you again and get overpowered by your loud stories! hahaha!!

Mahalos for the stuffs. I going do some groping with that buggah later. hopefully I no wind up in jail. ;) You so mento - no need do dat kine - I do appreciate it though.

  23. AC:

Eh BL, what are all these comments about "last night?" Did I miss out on something? :-(

  24. BananaFysh:

Okayy, watched the skit, and gotta wonder what the big deal is. :?

Sheesh! It's a JOKE people! The funniest jokes are the ones with a little bit of truth, right? ;) Actually, that one had kinda plenny truth. haha!

  25. Coconut Willy:

Reminds me of when Aiona was a Judge and he used to berate the defendant to shame. Heck Leno just last night was talking about how people from West Virginia (or someplace in the South) have no teeth.

  26. BananaFysh:

So what, how many times you like me post here?

Tell us what number you like hit, and me, Ynaku and M help you out.
Oh, and NKHEA. ;) No can forget him! :D

  27. Glenn:

    Hey BL,

Anoddah good topic. I tink the biggest problems plenty locals get is they take things too seriously...when I went to da mainland to watch one major college football game, I was with a few oddah locals. there was some mainland fans coming to our section and started to rag us down, telling us, "go back to the island you no belong here with the big boys.." I just thought that was the funniest thing, but most of the local fans, ho they were pissed...they were saying, "you fricka, come hea and say it to my face so I can broke your face..." I was hearing this and I was thinking come on they are only ragging us, don't take it personally. That's da reason why, you get fights breaking out at Aloha Stadium, if you look at who is involved in the fights...it's normally a local fan and a mainland fan...the SNL issue, is a perfect example of who we are as locals...we take offense to it and we like pound da mainland fan for teasing us...and we have leader this time to lead our attack our Lt. Gov himself...I mean come on, he's a basketball coach or former, high school for that matter and he should know that ragging is part of the game, but I guess since it involves the mainland and not anoddah local we take it personally. If you say in Hawaii, it's about the Aloha spirit...well this is really showing our true colors or perhaps the real meaning of the aloha spirit, if you get the kala, I treat you good...but if you no mo the kala, forget it cause you ain't local. to me our Lt gov should do what I feel the aloha spirit is all about "hang loose" and no sweat the small $h!t...because this ain't Corporate America this Hawaii.

    Glenn

  28. NKHEA:

    Yoooo howzit BL :)

I took alook at da skit 8O nah, wat da big deal ;? waz funny to me  I would tink most peoples get mo brains den dat ;) to believe one skit la dat for SNL you gatta be stupi....not to smart :D

Looks like I wen miss out last night eh :( so wat you goin Thirsty night to Fort St. :? ;) :)

    NKHEA...out of kim-chee :(

  29. Kelli:

I only caught part of the skit when it was on the news. I don't watch a lot of TV — just the news and the occasional movie. I can understand why some people would be upset, though. I'm sitting at the computer lab and my friends are talking about it right now. Haha!

  30. Carol Takahashi:

What with all the doom and gloom news on tv, Saturday Night Live still keeps me smiling and laughing at ourselves. The skit with Dwayne Johnson "The Rock" was one of the most hilarious I've seen in a while. I laughed on Saturday night and am still laughing after I watch it on the web. Come on people, where have your sense of humors gone? The dialogue between the "2 hula dancing brothers" and the tourists were like the dialogue that goes on in our heads when we are really hating our jobs, but must work to pay the bills. If I need a laugh, I'll be watching this skit for a long time.

  31. tita leerz:

It was funny because it's true! Even if it's $hitty fo say...people will laugh. If they don't get it, then maybe they live somewhere REALLY nice that most of us, who live here, cannot afford.

@islandgirl...you reminded me of when I went to NYC in 2001. I had traveller's checks with me. Used'm at dinner once. Friend (local transplant to NYC) told his friend (native NYC), "look, that's Hawaiian money with the kings face on it." She answered, "really, can I see?"

  32. bamboohouse808:

Wassup BL!! Still trying fo recover from last night. My right ear stay ringing from all the loud noise.

I saw this skit and thought it was funny. If somebody is dumb enough to watch the skit and think that's reality, then they need to get a grip and ALOHA HARD!!

  33. opso:

    " If you smeeeeeeeeell.......what da Kwonics......are cookin!" ;) ← hey look.....it's "The People's Eyebrow!"

  34. KAN:

Oooookaaaaay, opso - braddah - you been eating too much of BL's psychedelic kim chi.

I thought the skit was pretty equal opportunity. It made as much fun of the tourists as the locals. I paid more attention to the fact the other "Hawaiian" was playing a Fluke.

The average person who's never been to Hawai`i is not going to know much about it. Some people refuse to believe it snows in Hawai`i. When I finally convince them of that, then I tell them that when surf's up, everybody gets let out of school and we all go to the beach (j/k).

I'll admit it, I have stereotypes about other places in the U.S. I've never been. Before going to North Carolina for the first time, I was afraid of getting static for being part of an interracial couple (Sweetie is a haole boy). But it never happened. People were as nice as can be. I thought Iowa was going to be flat and boring, but it's mostly hilly and actually kind of interesting (to me at least).

Duke has plenty of other things to get his panties in a bunch about. I don't think this should be one of them.

  35. Hitman 24:

the aloha spirit is all about "hang loose" and no sweat the small $h!t...because this ain't Corporate America this Hawaii.

Amen Glenn - hopefully BL's bosses will finally understand this.

    Duke for Governor!!!

  38. bB:

that was hilarious. i think they did a good job of going both ways on this one.

i'm planning a event in june here on maui. the hotels don't give free rooms anymore, but they were willing to give a $500 discount. they were going to make over $25,000 from me and possible hotel rooms from my guests. plus there was no follow up call or email to see what i decided or if i have any questions after i visited the hotels. maybe i might be wrong thinking this is bad customer service.

i guess the hotels on maui are making good money, or don't want my business. i found another place that is even better than those hotels for a cheaper price.

Once again BL you are right on the money. The problem with today’s “Politically Correct” society is that everyone is so uptight. We’re so concerned to not offend anyone. To reitterate the new catch phrase, "Aloha Hard" people.

BTW – My question is “Does anyone still watch SNL?” That show hasn’t been relevant since the 70s.

  43. uncle jimmy:

KK, it seems not so much a matter of watching the show or not..

The dialogue between the "2 hula dancing brothers" and the tourists were like the dialogue that goes on in our heads when we are really hating our jobs, but must work to pay the bills. If I need a laugh, I'll be watching this skit for a long time.

    Rogah Dat!

And E Komo Mai to WWD! Carol Takahashi! Glad you could drop in and hopefully you'll be a regulah!

 Classic! I gotta remembah dat one.

Hey BL, NKHEA called you? He going have to cancel tonight at Fort Street Bar and Grill. He gotta go see his uddah accountant. Reschedule for next week sometime. Good for me cause I caught one cold from Shauna.

    bB:
that was hilarious. i think they did a good job of going both ways on this one.

    Yup.

maybe i might be wrong thinking this is bad customer service. i guess the hotels on maui are making good money, or don't want my business. i found another place that is even better than those hotels for a cheaper price.

Dat's exactly wat happened to Da Wife and I hea' on Oahu while planning for our wedding. Exact same "service" and we weren't talking chump change either. Well, they snooze they lose... but dat's da thing.... they KNOW they going book someone else so they no kea. Sad.

The problem with today’s “Politically Correct” society is that everyone is so uptight. We’re so concerned to not offend anyone. To reitterate the new catch phrase, "Aloha Hard" people.

Yeah, I wondah who's going to ca$h in on dat?

BTW – My question is “Does anyone still watch SNL?” That show hasn’t been relevant since the 70s.

I don't watch it but if I hea a funny skit was aired, I'll try and look it up.

  48. Bre:

Hi! Sorry I missed out on yesterday's blog. Too busy here at work.

What I thought was funny was the comment about getting lei'd. My nephews' favorite shirts from Hawaii are the ones that have that saying on them. They are early 20's so anything with sexual connotations is funny to them. Now I will tell them when they wear the shirt in Hawaii they are screaming "tourist!"

  49. Warrior Dave:

Right on Braddah Lance! I couldn't have said it any better than that.

I guess the Lt. and others are offended because much of it is true and hits too close to home.

Wait til SNL does a skit about our homeless problem...

  50. Ynaku:

Hi Bre, long time no talk to. How's thing over there? Hope all is well.

Where ever I travel I like to pick up t-shirts showing where I've been. I try not get the touristy ones though.

That "I got Lei'ed in Hawaii" is simply the funniest and totally touristy shirt.

Same with "My Grandma went to Hawaii and all she got me was this Da*med T-Shirt"

  51. Bre:

Hi Ynaku! Things are hectic around here as usual. I really need a Hawaii vacation to relax but, alas, no money! :( It's too bad because the prices for September and October are great.

I also like to get t-shirts from where I travel. I will eventually make a t-shirt quilt. (You use the picture on the t-shirt as part of the patch work squares).

Hope all is well for you. I was going to say something funny about the "get lei'd" saying but thought it might not be appropriate for the blog!!!

  52. Ynaku:

Hey Bre, Anything said on this blog in not inappropriate. Trust me. Bwahahaha. Sorry BL, This is a crazy place to be.

Bre, You really want people to comment on "Inappropriate" topics, go to Odds & Ends. I GUARANTEE you going get tons on response. :D

Ynaku...................... no shame spread the love.

  53. Ynaku:

Hey Bre, Check out both Odds & Ends, also Urban Mixed Plate today and you going see some of our pics. I got outed on both sites. Had a small get-together with some bloggers Tuesday night. Crazy good time.

  54. Ynaku:

OH but you must definitely come to WWD and provide the QUALITY comments. Right BL?

    Bre:

The pah-tay was more than just fun, after BL came it was nuts!

  57. Kristen:

Hi everyone! Though the skit did sting a little and I personally didn't find it very funny, it was SNL and of course they're going to make fun of stuff. I think it's pretty silly to get all worked up about it and really be offended. After all, SNL is not meant to be taken seriously!
BL, it was really great meeting you!

  58. Kristen:

Wassap wit dat!!! Inside Manoa Valley has 75 posts. I think this will make 58 here. This is Matt by the way. It was fun the other night. I love the energy man.
I personally like SNL. It is pretty funny stuff. I think the people that watch it understand that it is satire and therefore it is actually just great publicity for Hawaii. Everyone has there own opinion though. Take care, Matt P.S. Aren't you glad I'm not just "lurking"

  59. bB:

i guess i'm not the only one. pretty sad, i hear that they like the local people's business because the tourist not coming as much.

then, i hear the hotels might lay people off and how much it costs to run the hotel each day. they need to hustle to keep the hotel a float.

oh wells, i'm glad i got an awesome place and hope everything works out.

  60. BananaFysh:

Hoy BL! Howcome you never grab some of the mochi for Da Wife?!?!

then, i hear the hotels might lay people off and how much it costs to run the hotel each day.

I really hope they don't... my first "real" job was at a hotel...... until I got laid off because the hotel closed.

  62. snow:

i can see where the lt. gov is coming from... we're in the midst of an economic situation that's delivering a hard blow to our economy and our friends and neighbors. it's a sensitive situation for a lot of people and we and our government leaders are struggling to find answers.

i agree that we need to be able to laugh at ourselves and satires like those on SNL, but i also hope that people will realize the dark humor, which had a lot of truth to it, doesn't truly represent all of hawaii. as others have mentioned, there are a lot of people out there who don't know a lot about hawaii and who might give some weight to the SNL skit, if they watched it (but i'm hoping they didn't!)!

  63. BananaFysh:

    @BL -

No worries..... we ALL know your loyalties are to uh, da ODDah blog.

Ho wow eh, I'm just SO transparent! haha! ;)

@BL - Oh yeah, had something I forgot to give you - I left it at home. :(

    Sorry, makule.

    I send um to you.

    No hold your breath though.

    hehe ;)

  65. McLovin:

Saw skit when first aired last Sat. on NBC. Was hilarious and totally true. Actually Hawaii should be flattered that SNL even took the time to do a parody on Hawaii Tourism. Actually how many times have we encountered rude tourist? One time I was at Leonards and there was these Haole tourist ladies who parked their rental SUV right infront of the exit driveway. I politely told them that they should move their car because they were blocking everyone's exit. The lady yelled at me and said you should be thankful that we come to Hawaii and spend money so you guys get job. What an A@@.
