Last Saturday we had our dreaded "Field Day".
We didn't have one last year since the field held up from our last Field Day two years ago but this year, the field was especially bad with huge "sinkholes" and rough dirt so it called for one.
After the morning practice, I had some pizzas delivered and drinks on ice in the cooler - various Capri-Sun (less sugar brand for the players) and diet Pepsi Vanilla for me (watching my figure). 😆
Pop! Fizzzzzzz...... slurp..... aaaahhhhhh!
Nothing like a cold one - even though, uh, it's not da "true" beverage of choice - but very refreshing nonetheless after being a long practice.
BL: "Yes sir."
PLAYER: "You shouldn't be drinking that."
BL: "Yeah, I know. Soda is bad for you."
PLAYER: "No, you shouldn't be drinking diet."
BL: "Huh? Why not?"
PLAYER: "Because it has asartaphame."
BL: "It has as-a-wat?"
BL: "You mean aspartame?"
PLAYER: "Yeah, yeah! That one."
BL: "It's waaaay better than drinking Capri-Sun which is full of sugar."
PLAYER: "But our teacher said not to drink anything with aspar-thingy."
BL: "Your teacher told you that? Then what should you be drinking."
PLAYER: "JUICE and REGULAR SODA!!!"
So let me get this straight, our keiki are being told to drink sugar-laden drinks over a FDA approved sugar-substitute?
Wassap Wit Dat!
Have they (the teacher[s]) not seen the obesity rate steadily climb and from an early age now? Surly they must see it first hand being they deal with keiki daily and now they are "teaching" keiki to eat/drink sugar instead?
The players did say that they were told aspartame causes cancer which I think is great to make them aware but don't tell them that they should be drinking sugar based stuff instead!
Now that made me curious and being da Google guru dat I am, had to look it up. According to Wikipedia, the initial approval by the FDA was back in 1974 and as recent as 2007 a "safety evaluation found that the weight of existing scientific evidence indicates that aspartame is safe at current levels of consumption as a non-nutritive sweetener."
Aspartame, as anything else in this world, is a subject of controversy but if we can't trust those who "approved" it, who can we trust? Aren't there stringent tests and follow ups and more tests done before it's ok'd?
Did you know that over 90 countries worldwide approve and use aspartame daily?
I think it's safe to drink diet soda. 😛
But like anything else, in moderation. I can see the danger if you're drinking a case a day and cooking, baking or using aspartame in everyday foods but a "normal" person's consumption of aspartame can't be that much anyways.... right? And common sense would tell you that those who are pounding aspartame are the ones at risk of health concerns and not the ones who consume it moderately.
Well, I guess our whole day wasn't healthy anyways with pepperoni, extra cheese pizza and Capri-Sun.
Did I mention our late afternoon snack of double cheeseburgers and Aloha Maid juice as well? 🙄
Oh, we had water too. 😀
SHOUT OUT: A hugemangeous Mahalos goes out to Shawn Chang (old friend from Intermediate days) for allowing us to borrow his tiller! Without it, we wouldn't have been able to "fix" the field and now the field looks great.... and much safer! I should have taken before and after pics but my paparazzi mode wasn't on.
Also a hugemangeous Mahalos to a closet Kwonic, Makiki, for offering to rent one! He didn't have a tiller but wanted to rent one for us to use anyways! Wat ALOHA yeah? Cheee-hooo!
Anybody up for golf? Da Triad Golf Get Together will be Saturday Apr.25 at Hawaii Prince in the afternoon looking around 1ish (specific start time to be confirmed later). We was able to get a great deal on the green fees so if you're in, let me know asap via post or email... or both!
So far we already got 4 (including me) on Team WWD! - not too sure how Team MLC and Team O&E are doing just yet.
And yes of course, you're welcome to come to da pah-tay afterwards even if you no come golf.
