Wasted One... The First One Too

May 25th, 2009
By

Muchos Mahalos for all those who wished me well while I recovered from a very bad influenza strain, and no, it wasn't the H1N1 virus.

Per Doctor's orders, I was house arrested and kept in isolation even from Da Wife for almost a week. It didn't matter really since I practically slept for the the first 72 hours and going into the weekend it was just about trying to get my strength back considering I lost nearly 10 pounds.

The first holiday of the year has come and gone for me and while I would have loved to have spent it at the beach with a great BBQ, I'm still battling some residual effects of the flu. Believe me, food would have been a very welcome sight considering I could count the number of times I've eaten on a single hand this whole week... unless you count the three gallons of OJ.

My couch has my permanent okole print on it, I've actually slept more than my dogs and Da Wife has picked up some of the slack around da house..... ok, all da slack. Love ya Babe!

But enough of my misery, how did you all spend your Memorial holiday weekend? I hope it was a lot better than mine. Did you thank a serviceman/woman lately? Did anybody participate in the Lantern Ceremony? sassy7, sorry we couldn't meet up (unless you're still here for this week) and I hope the service went smoothly. Anybody watching the NBA Playoffs?

Geez, I'm not looking forward to going back to work especially since we're closing the month too.... maybe I feel another cold coming on?

    Glad you're better BL!

Got the house ready for sale in 2 weeks and had a nice dinner in Waikiki.

    You lost 10 lbs?
You better wear a weight belt or else you'll blow away!

  2. jaydee:

Glad to hear you're feeling better BL.

My weekend? Went golfing with a couple of friends yesterday then had some barbeque chicken and beef for dinner. Watched the Lakers get beat last night but hey, they won one in Denver so all is not lost. They still have homecourt advantage. Orland's looking pretty good right now. I think Lebron and company is in trouble!

  3. GA Bows:

Glad you're feeling better and props to Da Wife!

The weather here was overcast.. didn't do much outdoors. Just grilled up some kalbi and ribs yesterday... that's about it.

I was in awe at how terrible the Lakers played last night, hopefully they can turn it around. I'm not a big Lebron fan so I haven't watch any of that series.

    BL:

Kind of a drastic way to lose weight isn't it :?:  Glad you're up and about.

Spent the weekend working Friday night - saw the game winning shot by LeBron
Played a round of golf - nice to be out on the course again
Watched the Indy 500 - saw a lot of empty seats even thou there were over 300,000
Watched the LPGA Corning Classic - Wie played decent but everyone was shooting lights out, if you didn't shoot in the 60's you fell behind.
Washed car - been almost two months since the last wash :!: Rained Friday morning
    BEEBEEQ at home

  5. matt:

    BL,
glad it wasn't the piggies, but you still haven't ruled out the chickens or the SARS.
pretty chill weekend. went fishing (first halibut of the season). went to the oakland zoo (the boy enjoyed it). worked in the garden (zuccini coming along. corn coming along, tomatos coming along...melons...not so much).

  6. King Katonk:

    BL,
Glad you are up on your feet and feeling well. Yesterday, I worked in the morning and went to a BBQ for the rest of the day. Great food, good friends and good fun.

We spent the evening watching the basketball game. As a self-professed, Laker Hater, I was definitely in the minority. Anyway, when Denver’s Anthony Carter dropped that jump shot in the first half I leaped off the couch and nearly spilled my food. The contingency of L.A. fans thought I was nuts. I told them I had to give “AC” props for representing the Rainbow Warriors. O.K. two points is not a game changing event but at least he contributed in a positive way; let’s just forget his errant inbounds pass in game one.

BTW - Can anyone name the last UH player to score in an NBA playoff game?

  7. Ynaku:

Hey BL, glad you're better. That cough is nasty. Let me tell you. Hey, you can help me lose 10 lbs too? Next time I feel a flu coming on, can you pinch hit for me. Thanks Pal.

And KUDOS KUDOS KUDOS to Da wife. That's love. You owe her big time. Well, don't we all?

    Take care my bruddah.

  8. KAN:

Yikes, that's the worst way to lose that much weight that fast. I'm glad to hear you're feeling better, but not glad that you're still sick. Mrs. BL is da bomb.

Spent all weekend at the Folklife Festival at Seattle Center. We have friends that we only seem to see during the Festival. All kine music, dancing, sunshine, ono grindz, people watching - it was great.

  9. Kage:

    Welcome back BL!
So is that how I can lose 10 pounds...?

    Glad you are better.

My weekend was uneventful, jus da way I like.

  10. M:

    Good Morning BL!!!!! :)

Glad that you are back! We missed you!

My weekend was spent at my friends beach house on the north shore. It's a yearly get together. Lots of food, fishing, surfing, diving, swimming and friends.

I tink as long as D Howard plays smart. He's been getting into a ton of foul trouble in every game and the way he's racking up technicals..... he could be out of the entire finals!

Hi BL!! Glad to hear you are feeling better. We spent yesterday at the beach with our puppy and friends. This was the first time at the beach for the puppy and she loved it. Later we bbq'd steaks.

I told my husband thanks for serving our country even though Memorial Day is for those who died. I, luckily, don't know anyone who died while in the service so I did the next best thing and thanked my husband.

I hope you have a great weekend and enjoy DK Steakhouse. The wife has certainly earned a good dinner.

  17. matt:

Fish in the bay: certain fish (perch, smelt, sharks) spend most of their lives in the bay. those ones...not so much eating for me. some like halibut and stripers (and salmon, but our salmon runs are close because of low return numbers) migrate in and out with the season. good thing, too, because those buggahs are the ono ones.

oakland zoo is small, but it's perfect for the toddlers. smaller in size than the SF zoo, I never had to carry him for transportation (a couple of times to get a better view, but he didn't get tired walking around like he does at SF. plus, there are a bunch of hands on exhibits and play areas that are perfect for that age range. also (this weekend was an exception because the weathe was the pits all over), it's usually sunny in the Oakland hills (and usually cold and foggy at the SF zoo).

no topsy turvy tomatos for me. this year, I built a raised bed.

Wow, BL... glad to hear you finally beat this. I bet it feels good to be back in the world of the living. Did not do much for Memorial Day weekend as it was raining on and off. Did think about my dad who served in the Occupation of Japan after WWII and in the Korean War. I wish when my dad was alive he would have told us more about his time in the military but like many soldiers of his time, they just chose not to. I know he was proud to serve and opted to be buried in the Veteran's Cemetery in Hilo. Many kudos to all our brothers and sisters in the military today and in the past.

  22. 808 Dad:

    Hey Lance,
Glad you’re back in the saddle. My son just moved up to Boy Scouts so we went to Punch bowl on Sunday to place flags and leis on every grave. Very emotional and at the same time beautiful. We’ve been doing this for the past five years. Just looking at all the flags throughout the Punch Bowl it’s overwhelming. As they place a flag or lei on the grave they say the soldiers name and give a salute. They almost did not have enough leis this year but I thing they made it. I’ll try to send you some pics later.

    808 Dad

  23. Coconut Willy:

BL, glad to see you fired up da computa.

Spent the day with the kids. Trying to teach my boy to ride bike. Any suggestions? His balance not too good.
    Then went to the pool.
Took a nap with my 4 year old daughter.
    Good stuff!

Man! Wat a solid weekend you had! Those moments will be priceless!

As far as the bike thing goes, practice on a big grass field and one thing about wheels and balance.... they need to keep moving to stay upright easier. The slower you go the more prone he'll be to tipping over. Oh yeah, bring lots of water.... for you cause you'll be running a lot!

  25. 808 Dad:

    Me again,
When I told my seven year old daughter that every flag in Punch Bowl was a soldier who died protecting HER rights as an America she could not believe it. She said “They don’t even know me”. I told her that soldiers have been defending our rights for a very long time. She too started to read out loud every soldier’s name she could pronounce. It was a chicken skin moment. We even saw Ellison Onizuka’s grave site. I too wish people would appreciate more what every soldier sacrifices for each American.

    808 Dad

  26. King Katonk:

    @anklebiters – You got it.

Trevor Ruffin played for the Phoenix Suns his rookie season in 1994-95.

That team was pretty loaded with Charles Barkley (sorry the pun), Kevin Johnson, A.C. Green, Dan Majerle and the late Wayman Tisdale.

I guess with K.J. and Danny Ainge at point guard Trevor was fortunate to get some playing time.

But at least he represented da Bows!

(sorry, i think my "mom-ness" is showing! hee hee... ) anyway, yes, dave koz is the saxaphone player - he was great! my son was impressed! you never heard of asia manoa? they serve chinese food, which was yummy! and orange tree is the yogurt place, similar to yogurtland and menchie's, in aiea, across the street from time's and aiea bowl. it's kind of hidden, though. by the way, the alley was good... you think it's expensive? i guess it depends on what you eat... my husband had the mixed plate with mahi and hamburger steak (both were regular entree-sized) for $10.25 or something like that - thought he got a lot of food for the money.

BL - welcome back! definitely missed you and your witty blog for the week.

A nice quiet 3-day weekend, mostly trying to beat the heat. Good thing we added more split-air AC units with our ongoing remodeling...gave every unit a "test run" this weekend

I have split AC too! It's called running two fans at once on "oscillate".
    You lucky buggah!

BL - wwwaaaaattt??? you haven't felt 100% in a few years?!! WWD?! maybe you need to... sleep sometimes?? don't be running yourself ragged all the time! (sorry, i think my "mom-ness" is showing! hee hee... )

No..... it sounds like Da Wife too.

by the way, the alley was good... you think it's expensive? i guess it depends on what you eat... my husband had the mixed plate with mahi and hamburger steak (both were regular entree-sized) for $10.25 or something like that - thought he got a lot of food for the money.

For a casual place, you can drop a $100 easy if you're not careful.

Went to visit my GFs in Seoul. Numba 2 GF took me to a kalbi restaurant and we had dweji kalbi. Whoa, so ono, wen broke da mout, had to move the belt one notch. Hung out at Gyeongbokkung and Insadong. Too bad about Roh, Moo-hyung, tho.

Haven't been back to da motherland since I was in 4th grade. One day I'll make my way back for a visit. And yeah, there was a small memorial setup here at the Consulate I believe.

How's the magic? They might take out the Cavs.

I know! As long as they can shoot the 3's consistently and Howard doesn't keep fouling out they actually got a legitimate shot. But the sad thing is, if the Cavs or Lakers don't make it, the Finals might not be deemed "worth watching". The NBA needs at least of the headliners there. :???:
