Wat Kine You Get?

September 24th, 2009
By

No mattah if you had 'em for one month or one year, you always want (or lust aftah) a new one cause they popping out like popcorn.

Cell, cellular, wireless phones.... watevah you like call 'em - they can and will nevah satisfy everyone at any one time. They are constantly evolving and seems like eventually we'll be able to either teleport or taze people with our handheld devices.

From iPhones to Blackberry's to Razor's, it's a dog eat dog world in da wireless communications biz (just check out all da kiosks and mini-stores at EVERY SINGLE MALL) so dat made me wondah...... wat kine you get? If you no more......

Wassap Wit Dat!

Seriously, if you no more, how come? No like join da cult? But if you get, you like "upgrade" already? How long you had your phone? Ok,*gulp*, how many phones have you had already? Wat do you do with your old one(s)?

In about maybe da 15 years of carrying around a cell, I've gone through maybe about 10. Dat's like one every year and a half! Yikes :!: Well, two of those were lost so my average use is more like every two years. Yours last longer? Shorter?

Have you lost your phone(s) before? My friend has. Sad but funny really. He was visiting Chicago wen da Palm Pré just launched. He was really wanting it so he bought it up there and not even a full 24 hours later....... poof. Gone. Left it on da subway.

Wat about da accessories? Are you one to bling out your phone internally and externally? Apps (applications for all da tech challenged makule's out there), screen savers, covers, cases, lanyards and das only da "normal" stuff I can think of.

If you evah been to Japan, they are straight out pupule wen it comes to dat kine stuff. They get au' kine things hanging and at times da "accessories" are waaay biggah than da phone itself!

Is there something you wish your phone could do dat it can't now? Do you use all da features? Do you even know if there are special features on your phone? Wat's your favorite feature? Wat do you like/don't like about your phone? Wat phone do you wish you had right now?

I have a Palm Treo 755p and it serves it's purpose... I wish I had an iPhone but since my carrier is Sprint, I wish I had da Pré. Da 755p is a bit bulky but it has a big screen and a full keyboard which sold me. I have to say I probably only use more than half of it's useful features but use it daily so no complaints hea. I'm not a bling type of person so only got a case and da only apps I got downloaded are free.

You still using landline only or wat?

    FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a Samsung slider something or other. I don't know how to do fancy stuff uddah den calling someone on it.

    OL

  2. 2B:

I've had maybe 10 phones like you starting off with the Motorola Brick. Was actually the "family" phone but I would need to take it when I went out in High school just in case I got into "trouble".

Lately I've been into Razors since they fit in my pocket so nicely. It's time for an upgrade but man I like having a slim phone in my pocket that I can beat up. As much as I'd like an iPhone, it would get straight up abused in my pocket.

  3. kako mochi:

hello!! i have an iphone, which is the first generation one, but i didn't get it until about 6months after it initially came out! LOL - i had to wait for my 2year contract w/verizon to expire ;)

i love my iphone, and will probably get the 3G one when my contract is up in feb...i use it 80% of the features on a daily basis. when i was in san fran a few weeks ago, i used my google search to find the homes that were on "full house", "mrs. doubtfire", and "party of 5"!! LOL :)

  4. visitor:

A really old Sam Sung flip phone...EG335? Use it as a phone, very rarely text...too slow at it. Doesn't have all of the other web/email options, which suits me fine.

  5. M:

    Good morning BL! :)

I just use my phone to make and receive calls, that's it, that's all I need my phone for. I don't even know how to text.

My phone is about 3 years old, just a basic phone, nothing fancy and I'm happy with it. I'm lucky that it has bluetooth capabilities.

  6. 9th Island Girl:

I have a Razor, and I'm fine without the internet capabilities, etc. I always imitate my husband who has one of those smart phones. He stands at the elevator (or waiting for me on one of those rare times shopping), head down, staring at his phone, reading something on the net. :)

  7. anklebiters:

I've had cell phones beginning with the bag phones in the late '80 ($.45/min, no minute bundles), the Motorola brick, to the Motorola Star Tac flip phone, Sony's, Sanyo's, Samsung...currently have a Blackberry 8830 WE for work and a Sanyo Katana for personal. In all that time I've lost just one, the Sony, at a Speedzone in Corona. But I've lost them and the found them again in parking lots, hockey rinks, and at work.

I've always had Sprint as my long distance and cell phone carrier. I got rid of my landline 10 years ago as I needed it only for dialup connection to work. Now it's Cox high speed Internet. I also use the Panasonic Link-to-cell cordless so I can use Bluetooth to use my cell phone much like a regular cordless phone:

    http://www.panasonic.com/consumer_electronics/telephones_central/link-to-cell/link-to-cell.asp

My SM has the iPhone but AT&T as its carrier s*cks here BEEg time...many dropped calls locally and out-of-state.

  8. matt:

ive had about 6 phones for personal use and three different blackberries for work (plus one other direct connect phone for work). I've carried the work phones at the same time as the personal ones. average about two years per phone, since it's been about 12 years since i got my first one, but two of those six drowned (but I caught the fish!!) so say 3 years per phone for me.

now, I'm carrying the htc touch pro. love it. was a little worried about the stability of the ms mobile platform, but it's fine for me. I like that I can use all of the ms office stuff on my phone (and the browser is cool for checking ha blogs when waiting around!!!).

  9. GA Bows:

I've had probably 7 or 8 phones, starting with the Motorola "brick"
I currently have the Razor and not willing or wanting to upgrade. My work place gave me an iphone to use but it's locked up in my desk drawer.

       Goodmorning

... this may be weird ... but in the beginning I didn't want to carry a cell phone ... because I didn't want to be so reachable ... ;)

... but in the 10+ years that I've had one ... don't even remember when it actually started for me ... I've only gone through 3 phones ...

... the first was a Nokia, which was the smallest one at the time ... the second was a Motorola because it had a good camera ... and my current is just a used Motorola hand-me-down from a friend ... because I'm too lazy to get a new one ...

... and with all the new stuff ... I can't figure out just what I want anymore ...

  11. roach:

    BL,

I have a Nextel phone. Its the best phone in world, know why ? I don't pay a dime for its unlimited use, Uncle Sam pays for it. The system may drop a call every now & then, but who cares, its normally for business.

My wife on the other hand is a problem. She has lost or drowned 6 phones in 7 years. Its a good thing that we had insurance on most of the phones. I forget what kind of phone she has now but I know she wants one of those Iphones with all the different applications (e mail, gps, etc). WWD! She doesn't even work, maybe she can e mail the cat !

  12. snow:

i think i'm on about my sixth phone. my second sanyo katana, which i bought after i thought i lost my phone at pearlridge. we were going on a trip in a few days so i was slightly panicking... so we had my phone deactivated and bought a new one right away. went home and found my phone on the floor! oh well! but, due to that episode, i bought a case with a strap that i can clip on to my belt loop... probably my best investment ever! sure saves me from a lot of worrying about my phone coming out of my pocket when i need to have it on me.

anyway, my phone is pretty basic. not too many bells and whistles... but i do wish i had a keyboard. i do more texting now and it's so hard with a regular keypad! :( (no, i'm not like my niece who could send over ten thousand texts a month with a regular keypad phone!)

  13. Ynaku:

    Why wat kine you like?

I get da kine Casio Gzone for my personal phone. And den my work one is a BlackBerry w/out camera.

Da Gzone one suppose to be almost to military specs. Can get wet, drop em stronger receptions etc.

I carry 2 phones to work cause sometime my work one no work on da Big Island. Go figa

I still get landline and everybody should to so you can help pay my mortgage and bills. Thank you very much. :P

  14. sally:

    Ring Ring... Hello?

That's what I need my phone to do. I think this may be the 4th phone I've owned. Next one coming up soon when this battery starts pooping out. Cheaper to get da el cheapo no frills phone than buy a new battery.

I need my phone when I go shopping w/ other people. They cannot find me cuz sometimes I'm shorter then the clothes racks or the shelves.

    Whea you stay?
    By da shoes.
K-den, I stay by da shorts. I meet you at the bags.

Can you tell when I'm at Ross?

  15. BananaFysh:

Right now I have a LG Dare from Verizon. It's okay -- I wish the web browsing was better, like an iPhone. :(

It has a pretty good camera, though.

When I got my first phone several years ago, I just wanted a plain Jane phone, no bells and whistles, just a phone. But the more I carried one, the more I wanted additional features from my phone.

I think my current phone is my 4th phone. I had a Sanyo, Samsung, and a Motorola. I used to be on Sprint, then Nextel, but I had really crappy reception at my house. Plus it was a major pain to call customer service for anything, so I opted out and switched.

A couple years ago I went to the SuperMall in Washington, and there was this cell phone kiosk there with the most PUSHY salesmen I've ever seen! :x Wasn't the kind with all the cases and batteries, and whatnot, but the third-party guys who want to get you to switch carries, and go through them. They were so in-your-face about the whole thing -- if you tried to walk past and ignore them, they would get even more obnoxious and were almost to the point of verbally abusing you.

Had to hold back the false crack!

Nah nah nah, I wouldn't do that.

I just did a "crop duster" when I walked past them, though.

Take dat! I had chili last night!

BL, I use the Bluetooth function for my hands free device when I drive...

  18. anklebiters:

You would think dat long time customers would be treated bettah than "new" ones yeah? It always seems like da ones signing up for service get way bettah deals than da ones who've been loyal.

I'll be sure to bring that up the next time I upgrade my phone...if I do, I'll wait till the iPhone is available on a non-AT&T carrier.

I haven't been under their 1-2 year contract ever...it's been month-to-month for the last 15+ years with Sprint. You can't sign up for my plan anymore since its so cheap. The only problem is that you have to pay full price for any phone upgrade. It still cheaper - MSRP phone + $24X24 versus FREE phone + $39X24 - after all is said and done. You can't find a plan under $39 anymore.

  19. EMM386:

I with Verizon. I just got the Alias2. It does everything I need. I can check the sports scores, talk, text, update on FB and check my e-mail. That's about all I need my cel for. I text a lot so I just really need a phone with a full keypad to be happy.

  20. Coconut Willy:

When my contract with TMobile (Their coverage sucks!), went with Verizon. Wanted the iphone but not the price. Got the Samsung Omnia for $19.99. Not too user friendly. And Verizon is expensive!

Will probably conform and get the iphone next. That thing is so cool and easy to use.

  21. matt:

for all you sprint customers (been with them for all 12 years of mobile service), did you get the new mobile to mobile service also? they just let me know that they tacked it on to my plan for free. now, no matter what carrier the other caller is using and no matter if I called them or they called me, all mobile to mobile calls are free (24/7). no need all my minutes anymore, I guess.

  22. King Katonk:

I confess that I am a tech dinosaur. I have owned my current phone for over 6 years. The reason why I won’t change is that I get such a good deal on my month-to-month contract. If I decide to get a new phone they’ll have to write up a new agreement which would be 3 times the cost that I’m currently paying.

O.K. so the truth be told….I’m pake but at least my phone works.

  23. King Katonk:

Funny story. Once in awhile I get special passes to see movie previews weeks before they are released to the public. They enforce a strict policy prohibiting any type of recording devices, including cell phones, into the theater. I guess they are worried about the threat of piracy. Every cell phone must be held by management until the end of the movie. So here I am with my kids and waiting to walk through a metal detector and receive the blessing of the “magic wand” from one of the security guys. And of course, the alarm sounds and I willingly present my cell phone. The guy in charge takes one look at my phone, gives me a wisecrack smirk, then let’s me through. The guy next to me wonders why I received special preference. I told him that my phone doesn’t have a camera nor is it equipped with Bluetooth. He then realizes that I’m not so special after all and let’s out a similar wisecrack smirk.

But I will have the last laugh when my phone is selected for the Cenozoic Cell Phone Museum.

    O.K. you guys…stop smirking.

  24. kikaida:

Planning on getting an iPhone in December when my T-Mobile contract expires...

  25. hemajang:

I like my basic phone, it's small and light, no extras, don't text, on my 2nd phone, current phone about 3 years old. I wouldn't mind an iPhone or latest pre but need to cut expenses so out of the question to upgrade. I would rather spend on a new computer...maybe around Christmas for better deals.

  28. NKHEA:

Yooo howzit BL & everybody :)

First phone I had was dat gigantic Panasonic 8O must've weighted 5lbs. :( Went through maybe 10-15 phones already :o get iPhone now good fun :) get all kind stuffs u can do unrealz :P Started service with Honolulu Celular now AT&T, das waz some years ago ;)

    NKHEA.... c u all at da pah-tay

  29. Makiki:

I carry 2 - an iPhone (AT&T) and an Env2 (Verizon). The iPhone is for work (mostly) and the other is personal. Having 2 phones on different carriers is handy sometimes when there are service issues and I find myself looking things up on the iPhone while talking on the Env2.

As soon as I can send MMS texts on the iPhone I will probably get rid of the Env2 and switch back to a Razor since I keep my phones in my pockets. Since I keep them in my pockets I don't use cases or anything to avoid the extra bulk and I don't use a belt clip because of rollover (and I'm not talking about minutes).

    Alan from Makiki

PS - This is one of the things that "we have to have" that adds to our monthly expenses that our parents may not have had. Kinda scary when you think of all the things we pay for now that they just didn't have.

  30. theDman:

    Sprint, LG.

    Lime-green, Rumor, with slide-out keyboard.

    Yeah baby.

  31. Rodney Lee:

My first phone contract was with PrimeCo. Check out these rates.
Then they were bought out by GTE (I think) and their plan had all different rates for each hour of each day.
Gave that phone/plan to Paula and my daughter and me got a VoiceStream family plan (with Samsung S105 phones). Later, added my other daughter and Paula on to the family plan and Paula's dad for the 5th line.
Now, my in-laws have their own T-Mo family plan so we filled the empty slot with T-Mo at home.

Also jumped at the unlimited texting for ALL phones for $10 a month (not per phone - for ALL phones on the family plan).

Over the years, I've had my share of Nokia, Samsung, Sony-Ericsson, Motorola, and HTC phones. Now I'm using an iPhone.
Yup, iPhone on T-Mo. Full internet access for $5.99. Unlimited text. T-Mo to T-Mo free, evenings and weekends free. I've yet to find something that will beat this iPhone.

  32. Ynaku:

Hey King Katonk. I not smirking. My Blackberry doesn't have a camera too

  33. sally:

I look at what all fancy, fun stuffs you can do with phones and it makes me want one, but no sense. I cannot access my phone during work. When I'm w/ friends I don't wanna access my phone cuz I'm having too much fun. When I'm at home, I have my computer. hmmmm, all that access to fun is wasted on me. I text extremely rarely. Mostly receive from my daughter and a couple of friends. I don't even have roaming, but I don't travel all that much either.

    Gee, I'm boring.

  34. Rosette:

all you need is a quarter and call the police only..the rest you hang up!

  35. Rosette:

yes you upgrade then next thing you don't know how to use the darn thing!

  36. King Katonk:

@Ynaku. No worries...we'll just smirk together.

I hope some of the Lanceformers/Kwonics, MLCers, and Drones of the Hive will take a few photos of the Triad Pah-tay on Friday.

Give us non-locals a taste of what we're missing.

Next time we'll have @ankles charter a private jet.

  37. anklebiters:

    bl,
just got the pre a couple of weeks ago. if u eligible for upgrade u MAY be able get it out the door for $149+tax. then there is a mir for $100. total cost of pre $49+tax.

the neg: u gotta upgrade your plan to an "everything plan"
the pos: pre owner, and everything plan now comes with free ANY mobile carrier calls. yup, you'll only be charged for non cell calls (dont know about dialing voicemail?).

btw, i was a 3yr owner of 700p. pre is "cooler", but I do miss some of the palm content of my 700p, especially calendar input, and notes.

Having 2 phones on different carriers is handy sometimes when there are service issues and I find myself looking things up on the iPhone while talking on the Env2.

Makes sense! But you gotta carry two.

PS - This is one of the things that "we have to have" that adds to our monthly expenses that our parents may not have had. Kinda scary when you think of all the things we pay for now that they just didn't have.

Rogah dat! But not too bad if you don't pay for a landline (sorry Ynaku).

I hope some of the Lanceformers/Kwonics, MLCers, and Drones of the Hive will take a few photos of the Triad Pah-tay on Friday.

We'll try to keep them in focus..... because of da low lighting and all.

the neg: u gotta upgrade your plan to an "everything plan"

Talofa back greenbananas and E Komo Mai to WWD!

I hear ya about da "everything plan". It's a great deal if you've nevah had all dat before but das da main reason why Da Wife and I aren't switching. Our current plan with Sprint has "everything" (seriously) and it's only $30 a month ($60 for both of us) but da only catch, gotta pay da "extras" if get Blackberry or Pre's cause of da enhanced capabilities. So we're biting our lips and sticking with da next best phone in da Treo's. Now if da Treo's upgraded..........

tenks for da welcome. been a lurkah for a while. ;-)

my previous plan was 2K min. anytime + data + text on two phones(mine & wife) for $70+tax. upgrade to everything family cost me an extra $20/mo. i use my phone EXTENSIVELY, so while it cost a little more, not too damaging. just gotta curtail a plate lunch a week to balance budget. check with sprint over the phone, or go to a brick and mortar, and see if you can get any other discounts (ie, company, business, etc)

dont think treo will be making a comeback. new palms already in the works. i will probably upgrade my wifes phone in a year to a Palm Pixi...have you seen it? KEWL phone. check out http://www.precentral.net. she has a centro now, but doesnt like the keypad compared to her previous phone(700p)

Glad you could come out and join us!

...(mine & wife) for $70+tax. upgrade to everything family cost me an extra $20/mo.

But you're da only one with da Pre right? So wat if you're wife got a Pre too, you guys still would only be paying $90 a month?

My friends work at Sprint and they said it's $80 PER LINE to get da Pre so they said to just stay with da $30 plan cause I'll nevah see a plan like dat again. They don't even offer it anymore because they lose money.

I'd love to get da Pre but adding an additional $50 for a "real" web browser and cooler apps (that I still gotta buy) just isn't worth it.

Funny thing is that my plan is an "everything" plan... just that I don't have a special phone. I have exactly the same "benefits", just that my phone isn't a Pre. Go figgah.

    BL:

Looks like the iPhone can now do MMS and send picture messages today. This should help AT&T out a bit, but their service still s*cks. The exclusive deal AT&T and Apple signed terminates at the end of 2009 **.

** - another source says it expires at the end of 2010.

  43. anklebiters:

Co-worker tried to use the MMS - *BONG* - nice try, try again ..... traffic congestion...just what AT&T was worried about :!:

  44. greenbananas:

    bl-

if wife gets pre, i would still only pay $90/mo + tax. i "upgraded" to an "everything data share" plan which includes two phones. (i have discounts attached to my plan that brings cost down from $129/mo.)

i just called sprint cust. serv. and it is not $80/line. if u go 2 http://www.sprint.com you'll see the the plan i'm talking about, and you'll see that it is for 2 lines.

when i got the treos 3+ years ago, donovan @ sprint ala mo's helped me out A LOT. ;-) don't know if he's still there?

browser is waaayy cool. there are a bunch of apps for free. still miffed with calendar inputs (very important for my work). battery life out the box is messed up, gotta tweak settings to make it last the day for me.

yeah, my previous plan was "everything" as well, but you're forced to upgrade plans to get the pre...wwd! hence, that's why it took me this long to get the pre. i was waiting for $ to drop a bit, and it did!

ankles- some of my friends are iphone holdouts waiting for at&t contract to end too.
