Boy We Suck.... So Wea You Stay?

October 26th, 2009
By

Anoddah week.... anoddah beating.

Boy, wen it rains it pours for our young men in green and our Warriors suffered yet anoddah humiliating loss.

But wea were you?

Ok, so maybe not WEA were you but how come all da boo's? I know Halloween is coming up but c'mon no need put down da only team we "should" be supporting. Wen we were winning, it was green fever all ovah and people were jumping on da bandwagon left and right but now in these hard times you couldn't give away game tickets.

Wassap Wit Dat!

I know wat you guys thinking *BL already hearing OLis saying it*, it's always been - and forevah will be - about winning and da Benjamin's.

But last time I checked..... support was free.

You no like support 'em? No buy da ticket, no go to da game, no buy da hats, no buy da shirts and then go moan and groan and b!tch all you like.

There's no need to boo, cuss, yell things you wouldn't say in front of your mother to da players who are buss'ing okole right on da field. There's no need to pour any more Hawaiian salt on da wound during a game wea da seconds couldn't tick any fastah. You don't think da player's hearts are hurting by their (lack of) performance? You don't think they have any pride? Then you hear, "fire da coach!".

WASSAP WIT DAT!

Brah, give Coach Mac a chance. It's only his second year and on top of dat a new system, new direction and let's not fo'get all da injuries!    Jus' imagine if you nevah got a "chance" for dat job interview or given a "chance" to make right.

And Coach Mac, we heard you da first time wen you said da players are buss'ing okole but it's getting old wen you say dat ovah and ovah again at every press conference. I hear ya! I personally wish I had a coach like you dat cared about da players almost, if not more, than da game itself but in today's world, sadly, nobody cares. It's about instant gratification and immediate glory.

I can guarantee you that on ANY team, while they preach team work and "there's no 'I' in team", there are more than a handful of players who are out for their own. I've played/coached on literally wat feels like a thousand teams and trust and believe I haven't witnessed one team wea EVERY single one thought about da team first.

So wat's da solution?

I have no frickin' clue oddah than Trust and Believe. You gotta trust and believe dat da coaches and players can get in synch. You gotta trust and believe dat our Warriors can dig deeper in their hearts and overcome. You gotta just trust and believe.

Oh yeah, all you guys who are da LOUDEST complainers and back seat coaches of them all......... STOP BETTING ON DA GAME and maybe then you'll be a true supporter or just no bet at all!

Or at least bet on da right side then maybe you not going get all agro and nutz eh?

While we all worried about not evah revisiting anoddah VonAppen era, we can be frustrated and express our disappointment but let's show a little class and not do it during a game crushing any spirit left by da players trying to gut it out. While there may be nothing to cheer about, negative energy works da same as positive energy, it can either help or destroy.

Let's keep da faith..... or at least keep your negative energy away from da game should you be at 'Aloha' Stadium.

SECOND! The thing is.....the more "negative" the fans get, it'll just fuel the feelings of despair on the team and the season will end up a "self fulfilling prophecy".

Personally, all I ask for is the team to be competitive.

I was watching the game at a bar in Los Angeles. I looked like a fool in my UH shirt :(

  4. 9th Island Girl:

My friend hates to go to UH games, because he said the UH fans are so disrespectful to the other teams' fans. When UH fans start beating on our own players...that's sad.

  5. BananaFysh:

    Chee hoo! :D

I'm with you on this one BL.

I was at home watching PPV wearing my Warrior green! :)

You know, I don't think the Boise St. game was as bad as the score made it seem. At least the team came out with some fire! I think the haka made a difference.

They could get Boise to go 3 and out -- something we couldn't get Fresno St. or LA Tech to do. I think that's why Boise St. fell in the BCS rankings -- it wasn't like they played miles better than UH -- UH made WAY too many mistakes.

I dunno, maybe I'm a "homer," but I think we get chance to win a few more games this season -- even a couple we're "supposed to" lose. ;)

  6. visitor:

We've had season tickets for years...good times and bad. I think it's the frustration that has some fans reacting negatively. I don't think anyone is down on the players, we know that they are trying their best. But it's the expectation to do well and the failure to do so that may be getting to even long time supporters.

Part of it was all of the hype on how good this team was going to be. The coaches and the media played it up during preseason and when they won the first two games against mediocre, at best teams (Central Arkansas and Washington St), more hype. Then reality set in along with some injuries. We are not a very good team. No fault to the players, but we're not a very good team. But the coaches and media continued to hype false expectations.

Early on Mack was talking WAC Championship. When that looked bleak, he said Bowl Game. Everyone was excited. And when beaten by UNLV, LA Tech, Fresno St., Idaho and Boise and a dismal outlook for the rest of the games...the fans get tired and frustrated with "how well the team played and this is a good football team."

For many, especially with the way the economy is, it's a very expensive way to spend a Saturday night only to see the home team not even in the game.

  7. KAN:

I'll always cheer for UH before any other college team, but I also reserve the right to yell at them while watching the game.

  8. M:

    Good morning BL!

Either you support the warriors or don't! If you only support the warriors when they win, then you not one true warrior fan, you one fake one!

BL, whea you was last night? we was waiting fo you....

  9. snow:

i support the team, win or lose... and, yes, i was there! i stayed until the very end, to support the team. sure, the team played hard and, yes, they made mistakes... but i find it disrespectful when people boo and yell negative things at the players, both the opposing team and our own! WWD?!! does paying for your ticket give you that right? maybe, it's a free country afterall... but having class comes without a price. my pet peeve, however, is when people leave early... like, during the third quarter! it may have been painful or frustrating to watch until the end... but, at this point in the season especially, what were they expecting????

  10. buddahbelly:

I am soo frustrated this year with the way the season is going but booing the team is just wrong. There are definitely some coaching assignments that need to be reviewed at the end of this season but we gotta support the players. I watch the games on PPV and just have to keep reminding myself that these are just kids. I can remember being that young and cannot imagine having to deal with the pressure the players must have to deal with the win/loss and on top of that worry about grades. We all gotta remember to take the good with the bad, remember 0 -12? At least this season won't be that bad.

  11. roach:

    BL,

Booing of any college, high school, little league, etc. sports team shows NO CLASS at all. Theses kids are trying as hard as they can but heart will rarely win over physical superiority. The athletes aren't getting paid for their participation, so what gives the people in the stands the "right" to boo them ? If you don't like the outcome of the games, stay home & get drunk. The worst part is that most the booing crowd wouldn't have the guts or ability to get on the field with them. Lastly, what are you teaching your children while they are watching boo & swear in the stands. Think about, no class yeah !

  12. anklebiters:

    BL:

ASU is in the same boat as UH....they were booing Sullivan during the loss to Washington St, wanting the 2nd string QB in (kinda reminds me of Chang a few years back)....cheering him after that miracle 50yd TD at the end of the Washington game...and probably booing him watching the game against Stanford, another loss, on TV. And it doesn't get any better with Cal, USC, Oregon, UCLA, and UofA to finish the season. We'll be on the sidelines too, while watching the bowls games on TV.

Beating UH and watching your rank in the polls drop....have we slipped that far, so quickly :?: It may be a win less October and maybe even November and December, Utah State may not be a guaranteed win either. As long as their game is on satellite, I'll record it. But it doesn't mean I have to watch them lose either. I think we've all gotten spoiled by the Brennan years....win or lose the game was always exciting, except for the Sugar Bowl.

The only thing I tink of everytime I hear all da negative boo'ing is da Ghostbusters (fo'get which one) with da "negative slime" wea da slime was feeding off da negative vibes from da people.

Personally, all I ask for is the team to be competitive.

I believe they are but da question is, to wat level cause our "level" seems to be lower than da rest.

I've been saying dat for awhile. We've got (had) some great players but we just don't have da resources to have 22 (1st team offense/defense) great players like in some marquee collegiate teams.

  14. visitor:

@ Snow - We stay to the end of the games too. It all gets put in perspective when the teams meet and shake hands and later when the Alma Mater is played.

Having kids who played sports up through high school, you realize that it's not the kids. And it hurts when "fans" get on them. And never should anyone boo any student-athlete.

But the reality today is that college athletics, especially football and basketball, have taken on a life of their own. It's become a billion dollar business. Yes, the players are student-athletes, but because of the money, attention and expectations attributed to a successful team, the priorities have become distorted. Unfortunately, we live in a world where winning has become the priority. And it can get ugly when it's not achieved.

    Go Bows!

  15. Makiki:

This is tough. I fully support the team but I don't agree with coach Mack getting over 1 mil. with no head coaching experience. Let's hope that he can get it together.

Anyone consider that SMU and coach June may play in the Hawaii Bowl? It would be an interesting match up if UH and SMU both were able to make it.

  16. King Katonk:

    BL,
No doubt it’s been a tough year with the injuries, especially in key positions. Folks need to understand that it is not easy for a kid to step in and perform at this high level. As long as they are willing to step up and give it their all then I’m o.k. with that. Sure, I get disappointed as does any fan but I will not resort to booing.

Think about it, booing the home team this may actually have an adverse affect on future recruiting. How many local prospects would want to be degraded by their hometown? What if Manti Te’o had played for UH this season? Heck, he would be thinking “I stayed for this?” It’s no wonder many talented players opt for the mainland.

These kids need our support no matter what the circumstances and booing only adds to the negative weight.

As my dad used to say, “Are you part of the solution or part of the problem.”

  17. B:

I really believe there is no comparision between Von Appen years and now. the players did not "play" during those years, they only showed up. this second season of mack's has 2 new coaches, new "play caller", a defense that really had no full time returning starters, offense only really having 2 experienced receivers and now injuries to many starters. despite all of that these players show up to play. while the results are not what we wanted, we still need to support the team. booing, cussing, whatevers is class-less. frustrated we all are, but gotta look for the positives.( as dynamic as Boise offense is they were only 3 of 13 on 3rd conversions)

  18. King Katonk:

BL…”STOP BETTING ON DA GAME”…That’s hilarious.

These bozos should cease their addictive dream of making easy money. Do it the right way…earn it

The Warriors don’t need fair-weather, foul-mouthed, bandwagon armchair wannabes making Aloha Stadium a bad place to spend Saturday night. Do us a favor and just stay at home where you can throw all your empty 40 oz. Olde English 800 bottles at your 720i plasma while waiting for your crack pipe to cool down.

There is enough (literal) garbage at the stadium. No need for extra trash…as in the (figurative) human kind.

@BL -- re:PPV in HD. To me, it's not as big a deal. I'm just happy to be able to see the games. I know we stay shelling out some $$$ to watch um, and would be good if WAS in HD, but it's not going to stop me from watching if it's not.

Would be good if was cheaper, though! Wasn't that long ago when we could watch the game for free on Maui, and was live too! Oh well. :(

Oh yeah, I know what you talking about when that 2nd string running back kept running it down the defense's throat and they couldn't stop it. :( That was brutal. But that was at the end when never really matter. The D stepped it up early and got the 3 and outs, and held BSU to field goals.

Too bad the offense backed the D against the wall over and over. :(

  24. Rodney Lee:

Nah. At least I don't have to pay(-per-view) or wait until the next day to watch the Raiders lose.

Those ladies epitomize what it is to be a real fan of the game... they come and watch, cheer their hearts out, even when the ladies lose, the aunties are still right there with lei and hugs for the players, EVEN ON THE ODDAH TEAM!!! I know I going get laughed at for saying it, but I wish UH Football fans would watch more Wahine Volleyball at take a hint from the aunties, cuz the aunties know what it takes to be REAL FANS!!

Went to da game wit one of my keiki. Da rest of da family elected to do other activites dat evening.

Bummas on da game but gotta remembah, we was using the 3rd and 4th string qb, plus you missing your top long threat receiver (which opens up the passing lanes for the slots), top LB, and couple guys off da OL. Think of how your favorite college or pro team would do missing all these key people.

I think the only time I got real upset at UH that night was when the punter kicked a 12 yard punt off da side of his foot.

  37. Glenn Miyashiro:

    Some thoughts….

My tinking bout UH football is all bout the kala…it’s a business and if I were to invest my kala in a business…da business betta win or do good…since UH not winning I show my support by reading bout them in the newspaper…

On Coach Mac…all I can say is he betta start winning or I feel he should be fired…injuries is all part of da game...turnover in roster (lose playas to graduation or da draft) is all part of da game…this is D-1 college football people expect “W’s” and don’t want to hear excuses…

I think UH’s talent level just plain sucks…they don’t have da horses to compete with oddah teams…heart can only take you so far…you need talent to compete…you BL being one coach know that u as one coach can only do so much…it’s your playas dat play da game…but who gets da heat…da coach…

  38. Rodney Lee:

I know da Wahine VB is/will always be top ranked but I really wondah wat would happen if they faltered and went for a few years not dominating da WAC. Would da support still be there? Not dat I evah wish dat to happen but something to wondah about.

Take a look at the Men's volleyball team...

  39. BananaFysh:

    @Rodney -- amen. ;)

If the Wahine started losing, a lot of "fans" would abandon the team. For sure the diehards like the "Aunties" would still go to every single game, and cheer until they lose their voice, but all the fair-weather fans would stay home and monku.

I only went to a couple of Wahine games, and that was kinda trippy. Sat in front of a guy who complained about the Wahine the WHOLE GAME! Sheesh! Another time I sat next to "fans" who sat on their hands the whole game and never made a peep. I think they just went to the game to eat. :?

What's with these "fans" who go to the games and don't wear our colors? When I go, I make it a point to wear green, or have Hawaii emblazoned apparel. What, no can go Sack and Save and buy a Hawaii t-shirt for $5? Mo better than wearing that RED SHIRT that just so happens to be the OPPOSING TEAM'S COLOR!!! WWD!!!?!?! :x

I went to the UH football game this year when we played Washington State. You know what I saw? Every single fan of WSU was wearing WSU apparel! There was no doubt who they were cheering for, even though their team sucks. The Hawaii fans? Well, a majority of them were wearing green or the "H" logo, but there were some of them wearing RED. WWD!!!?!?! They weren't Wazzu fans sitting in the wrong section -- they were UH fans! No can. :|

  40. King Katonk:

    @Glenn M.,

How do you explain Boise State? UH has more players in the NFL than the Broncos. Granted most of these players were from JJ's regime, but I think BSU plays with a lot of heart to make up for their deficiencies in talent. Most of all, they are fundamentally sound in all aspects of the game. Nothing fancy, they just get the job done. There's no doubt that it all has to do with coaching.

I want to see Coach Mac succeed but he has to set the tone and build a solid program (Think Mike Singletary.) Hey, it’s time to get tough and see what these kids are made of.

As ex-Boise State and current Colorado coach, Dan Hawkins said,

    "It's Division I football…It ain't intramurals!"

    Go Warriors

  41. Glenn Miyashiro:

    @ King Katonk:

You bring up good point bout UH has moa formers playas in da NFL than Boise State…but it only points out to a couple of playas on da team and da couple of playas only make up a fraction of da team…I tink Boise State’s overall team talent is better than UH’s overall team talent…

Coaching has a part in da equation to a team’s success…but what happen to Dan Hawkins…I thought he was a good coach at Boise State….but dat same success did not translate to Colorado…da only thing I agree wit you bout coaching is da recruiting and evaluating talent aspect of coaching….if da coach no can recruit he no can win…if da coach no can evaluate the playas potential he no can win…

We shall see wat happens in a couple of years wit Boise State…wit da rise of Washington because of Steve Sarkisian is a good national recruiter…we see how Boise State fares in da upcoming years…because a lot of da Boise State playas are from da Washington and west coast area…da playas Boise use to get now might go to Washington…things could change for Boise State and Washington on the recruiting trails…look at how bad Washington was and for how long…it kinda coincides wit Boise State’s success…

Hey BL..sorry been small kine lurkah lately.......we are die hard UH fans...and we will be as long as we live away from the island...right now we support our local Weber State team, cause get plenty locals. They are not doing as good as they did last year, we support them non the less... Mike Hoke is from Kamehameha, and then you get the Higgin brothers from Kaiser and many more locals who play way up hea...One thing they do here for the local community is offer a Home Game season pass...it's like $100.00 per family for the season, you get (6) tickets each home game. And you sit in general admission which is like always on the guest side. It's the side with all the sun and rain, but then it gives you the opportunity to watch and support your home team always. Like I said, there or not, we still support UH, Kahuku, and even the local boys that play for USC and Norte Dame. When the island ties play we support them all they way....win, lose, tie, play or no play...we gotta cheer them on...

  43. King Katonk:

    @Glenn M.

    Good points about Boise State.

It's all good that we root for the same team.

And people who yell the whole game about "do it this way" or "do it that way" or "If they did it my way we'd smash 'em!".

At home we wondah about certain play calling but it's cause we have experience....... playing Madden on da PS3.

UH logos on the truck, Logo t-shirts, Logo tattoo (husb's calf), watch other away games on PPV.

Tat on da calf? Now das hardcore!

Funny you mention dat cause I tell all my friends dat "heart" can carry you through high school (I'm proof) but talent/skills will take you beyond. I agree too dat at UH we need to "upgrade" our talent level. We have star players but das just it, only a handful of players. Not like any of da top 10 teams wea they can go 2 or 3 deep in their bench players.

Exactomondo. It's da "skill" part dat pushes them ovah da top. Da execution is unreal. UH has shown fundamental breakdowns at unfortunatly da opposing team takes advantage.
