I'm A 77

January 26th, 2010
By

Ok, I really don't know wat numbah I am but around 4am dis morning, for some reason I just sat up in bed and all I could tink about was dat Sleep Number Bed commercial. You know da one wea you and your partner can "inflate" your side of da bed to your liking.

And then dat got me tinking.... how do people like to sleep?

Well for me, gotta have minimum two pillows and not da fluffy kine either - gotta be da firm kine and then not stacked on top of each oddah but one "base" and da oddah kinda pitched forward so wea not only my head is supported but my neck and partial shoulders. I like da "reclined effect". I dunno why but it "feels good" and plus I tink help tone down my snoring.

I "have to" have my feet tucked in undah da sheet or blanket and just my feet. I know, weirdo but for some reason I feel "covered" wen it's li'dat. Only wen it's supah hot and/or humid I no do dat but any oddah time gotta keep my toesies toasty.

And I'm not one to roll around in bed either. I start on my back and wake up on my back. I barely move throughout da night unless I'm in a restless mood even wen I'm sick. Da Wife had mentioned da oddah day if I brushed my hair cause I had da "flat spot" on da back of my head.

Oh yeah, I get da "jimmy legs".     Gotta "shake 'em" to fall asleep - dunno why but I've been doing dat since elementary. My mom used to scold me all da time but I couldn't help it.     She even bought me one of those massaging pads for your back but I laid it down and put my legs on it to "relax" my legs.

So how you sleep? Full covers? Just da sheet? Soft pillow? Sobakawa pillow? No pillow? Do you evah switch sides? How's about wen you travel? Bring your own pillow or blanket? Same side or change 'em up? Do you have any "must do's", "don't do's"?

Or are you still sleeping?

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I talk in my sleep. LOL

  3. M:

    Howzit BL!

I have to sleep on the right side of the bed and lay on my left side. I just cover my feet with the blanket unless it's cold. I use a Tempur-Pedic pillow, the contoured type. I snore so I use a special mouth piece when I sleep.

When we travel I try to sleep on the right side of the bed and use the hotel pillows. I never have a good nights sleep when we travel, it's just not the same as sleeping in your own bed.

  4. Kage:

    Good Morning.

I need to have my feet uncovered to go to sleep. Even if it is freezing cold, I start with my feet in the covers, but will take them out as soon as they are no longer numb...

I too NEED to shake my legs before falling asleep. Dunno why, it just needs to be done.

I am all over the bed throughout the night. It is worse when it is humid, hot or I am sick.

  5. snow:

i usually have to use a blanket, unless it's super hot... but, i have to have my arms covered! most of the time, my feet are out, though. i used to always tuck in the blanket but i'd get cold because i'd kick the blanket off my feet, then my arms would be cold! actually, when it's really cold, i sleep with a jacket on!

  6. J.P.:

I think the way I sleep is kinda weird but funny, I guess. I usually go to sleep with a blanket covered but somehow during the middle of the night, I kick off the blanket and thus starts the snoring. My dad said the only way my snoring is "contained" is that he covers the blanket over me again. I don't have proof of that but I guess I snore pretty loud to wake my parents and sister up and have them do that. It don't matter if I have more than one blanket over me, I'll still kick it off when I sleep even if the weather is chilly.

I also gotta sleep facing the wall but by the time I wake up, I could be on the other side, on my stomach, reclined, etc. Funny how all this rarely happens when I'm in a hotel room or what-not.

  7. buddahbelly:

I gotta sleep on my side or the snoring starts and da wife start giving me da elbow fo knock it off already. However, when I'm by myself I start sleeping on my back but wake up on my side. Kinda Pavlov yeah?

  8. opso:

oh......how you like to fo real kine "sleep". ;)

i use 4 pillows. da usage varies. 2 or three to keep da head propped up, one under my knees or between da thighs if i sleep on my side, one to hug if sleeping on da side to keep from getting numb arms......or to fantasize. ;)
one usually ends up on da floor.

comforter usage varies too. also crumpled under my knees, half on if shmall kine cold or full on when supah cold or end up on da floor.

in oddah words.....my beds a mess.

and gotta have da t.v on. with da timer set for 45 minutes. but if get sumptin good.....da timer varies too.

and what da hell is "jimmy legs"? :?

    :D :D :D :D :D Good Almost Lunch Time Everyone!!! :D :D :D :D :D

... hey Braddah Lance ... I remember small kid time ... I used to be almost wrapped completely in my blankets ... like a mummy ... up to my eyeballs ... so only the top of my head wasn't covered ... you know, so no evil monster could get me while I'm sleeping ...

... but now ... since there's no evil monsters ... and anyway, I realize what little protection a blanket affords ... I don't need to be completely wrapped ... only if cold ...

... at the very least I like my legs covered ... but I don't think I need anything else ... to be happy ...

... well, maybe a woman sleeping next to me ... ;)

    ... Have a Good One Everyone!!! ...

  13. onecupcoffee:

I have a light weight down comforter I love. It keeps me cool in warm weather and warm in cool weather. Not sure why it works that way. Miss my down when I'm away from home.

  14. jaydee:

I need just one soft pillow and in summertime, just a sheet. Winter time I need the down blanket. When the temperature is 62 degrees in the morning it's so hard to get out from under that nice warm bed.

Oh yeah, I usually sleep with one foot sticking out from under the covers. Don't ask me why. I guess I'm just weird 'li dat! :)

  15. KAN:

I usually fall asleep on my stomach, then I rotate to my left side, then onto my back. I can only fall asleep on my back when I'm exhausted, then I snore. :-( If I fall asleep on my right side, for some reason, I don't turn in my sleep, and my right arm is all dead when I wake up.

I need only 1 pillow at home, but need at least 2 when I'm not at home.

We have a waterbed, which I love for the even back support, but if Sweetie or I are restless, ju'like tidal wave. :-) . I especially like it in the winter time because you can turn up the thermostat on the water - it's so nice getting into a warm bed at night.

  16. KAN:

When I was a kid, I used to sleepwalk. Luckily, I never went outside. My cousin's cousin on Maui used to leave the house when he sleepwalked (is that a word?) - it made his parents crazy.

  17. BananaFysh:

I usually use a light blanket and my feet uncovered. My feet have to breathe!

2 pillows to sleep on an incline help too.

I have sleep apnea, so I need the mask/machine to breathe. My wife used to tell me that I used to shake the bed all the time when I slept, and It kept her awake. What that was was me waking up because I couldn't breathe. Plus I used to snore SUPER LOUD. I guess that didn't help matters any.

It took me a LONG TIME to go through the whole night with that thing on my face, blowing air at me all night. But now that I'm used to it, it's hard to sleep without it.

  18. NEO:

I can sleep anywhere... I even sleep standing up sometimes, leaning on something... But @ home I sleep on a futon bed, so it's pretty firm... I gotta have at least 2 pillows, da firm kine. Usually I fall asleep on my back, but I'm a tosser and turner, so I may end up on the other side of the bed, or sometimes I even end up with my head where my feet was... I also use two different kine blankets... when it's hot, I use my mil-spec poncho liner (it's just like satin) when colder I use my "nap" blanket from Brookstone... think microfiber fleece, but softer and more warm. So yeah... if Opso and dem have issues, I got major issues with sleep...

    NEO

  19. M:

I can't sleep on a plane. I can stay up all night, get on the plane and try to sleep but I can't go to sleep. :(

  20. 9th Island Girl:

I sleep on my back, with one pillow. Like Bananafysh, I use a light blanket and leave my feet uncovered. If it's really cold, I'll keep my feet under for a little while, but I'll kick it off during the night.

I snore when I'm congested, as I have been with this *?!**/^ vog. If it's a light snore, my husband says I was trimming the hedges. If it was a loud snore, I was mowing the lawn. :)

  21. J.P.:

    @BL....

I don't think the weights would work LOL. The room service idea is a thought, though. I highly doubt they'll agree to that LOL. Nah, the bed's too comfortable so gotta sleep all over the place. :-D

    @BananaFysh...

Yeah, I have sleep apnea too. They told me to try the mask for trial run but I kept yanking that thing off in the middle of the night so needless to say, I don't use that thing.

  22. BananaFysh:

@J.P. - I know what it's like to yank that mask off in the middle of the night. I think what was happening was when I tossed and turned, the mask would crack a little from my face, and the air would blast me in the eye, waking me up. I was determined to make it, because my oxygen level was going down to 60% through the night!

I tried all kine stuff to help me go through the night, like using a humidifier, a different mask and stuff. But the first time I made it through the night was when I was on vacation in Seattle. It was pretty cold that night, and I bundled up tight (with my feet sticking out! ;) ) and I didn't move all night. I guess that was the key!

After that, I managed to make it through the night, even when I got back home.

Now I use a mask that's made for "active sleepers" and I have very few problems.

  23. M:

I have sleep apnea too and I snore very loud. I use this mouth piece appliance called PureSleep that I got on-line. It stopped my snoring completely and it's a treatment for sleep apnea too.

I'm happy and masako is happier too! :)

  24. Kage:

@M - I was wondering if that mouth piece worked or not. Good to know it works for you. I was seriously thinking about getting one for myself.

I got tested for sleep apnea, but have not got the results yet. I think it may have been a bad night for the test, because I was having an allergic reaction to the antibiotics I was taking and did not know it at the time. I did not sleep much that night.

  25. bamboohouse808:

I can sleep on almost anything as long as I have a firm pillow for my head. I've been known to fall asleep on tile floors and sitting up leaning against the wall. I like it to be cool when I sleep, so I usually don't use a blanket. Only on those VERY COLD 60 degree Hawaii nights, do I use a very light blanket. I also sleep any kine way. Left, right, back, stomach. No matter. Just gotta get the pillow.

  26. Koreankanak:

I too suffer from sleep apnea and have been hooked up for the last couple of years. It has helped tremendously. Although I dont get more than 6 hours of sleep at a time, it is uninterrupted and I feel very rested. I use 3 pillows so that I also can get that slight slope like a recliner. I also sleep on my back with a pillow under my knees. I don't move at all and wake up the way I started.

  27. KAN:

Wow, BL, you hit a good topic on this one!

One more thing - I've gotten a lot more noise sensitive as I've gotten older. When I was a kid, I once slept through a fire (with all the firetruck sirens and people yelling) at a house 3 houses away. I can't do that now. In the summertime when the bedroom windows are open, I usually have to turn the fan on for white noise or wear earplugs.

I have a couple of friends who have big sleep issues, and you'd be surprised at all the health problems that arise from not getting enough sleep.

  28. hemajang:

Sleep on floor with 2 pillows and light futon. Sleep on left side but may shift to right but usually wake up on left. Wake up with left side hair all funny kine and sleep marks only on left side. Two pillows help raise head to keep pressure off shoulder, but sometimes get circulation cut off and arm go dead. I'm usually in the fetal position, arms in and like to have hands spread out and flat on floor...seems to relax me and sleep faster. Cannot sleep on back or stomach but can take naps on back. Must have dark room to sleep.

I tend to stretch my legs at night and used get those nasty calf cramps...huuu, da sore but discovered that if you stretch with your feet pointed up and back instead of straight get less chance you going cramp.

  29. B:

sleep on the floor too. get couple pillows and heavy blanket. actually can sleep anykine place. odda half says I snore so loud even da neighbors complain. da worstest place fo sleep if stay at da beach an get mosquitos.

  30. pink lady:

the bf snores and it drives me crazy because i am a very light sleeper. i'm going to look into that PureSleep mouth piece thing now. we just saw the commercial last night and he was doubtful about it.

Oh yeah, I usually sleep with one foot sticking out from under the covers. Don't ask me why. I guess I'm just weird 'li dat!

Know what's really good to sleep with? A "Mink Blanket". Its those HEAVY ONES that you can buy at a Korean store. Its so heavy if you try and wash it in the washer....garans the washing machine going all out of balance and when it goes to the "spin" cycle you gonna hear some mean "KaTAH......Ka TAH.....KaTAH"

Use dat blanket and it'll make you feel like you're the insides of a sandwich........you'll really sleep good!

I have 3 heavy quilts on my bed and fleece sheets-cold here! I have a queen pillowtop with a featherbed on top and then a huge fiber bed on top of that. I know, I'm like the princess and the pea! I am a stomach/side sleeper and I have to have the blankets tucked in close all swaddled up like. I think I need to go take a nap now.

  35. Scott:

When I used to drink a lot, I would sleep walk and do crazy things. I woke up butt naked on the couch many times, and once I redecorated our living room furniture while asleep. I woke up with pictures from our bathroom stacked in our bedroom and my wife says "did you drink whiskey again last night?" :)

Nowadays, I just crash and wake up once or twice when the baby screams. My wife does all the hard work.

  38. Rodney Lee:

I use a sobakara pillow. The crunchy noise doesn't bother me. On trips, I have to use 2 pilllows or one folded up pillow.

My lower half is like a stomach sleeper, but my upper half is like a side sleeper - yeah, I guess I'm twisted. The arm that I'm lying on has to go under my pillow and extend out - usually towards the corner of the bed.

My under leg is straight while my upper leg is bent. This is so our silky terrier can sleep between my calves and our pom-chi can tuck in behind my bent knee.

With all these dogs around me, I don't have room to toss and turn during the night. LOL.

  39. M:

We have a Cal King bed.

i'm going to look into that PureSleep mouth piece thing now. we just saw the commercial last night and he was doubtful about it.

Why not get it wit da combination nose strips too? Da nose strips supposed to help open da nasal passages.

  42. sally:

    zzzzzzzzzzzz
I snore when I'm really really tired. Sometimes I wake up from a snort. HAHAHA so shame, I hope my neighbors cannot hear.

I sleep with what I call my baban blanket. I wore out my first two, I'm on my third. She made tons of them in her lifetime so I don't think I'll run out. It's a security thing, makes me feel da love.

But funny cuz I don't really use it completely. My legs cannot be covered and I cannot have anything touching my neck (t-shirts included). So I take one corner of the blanket and drag it across my tummy, hold the corner in my hand and fall asleep. Linus Syndrome? ha!

If it's really cold I'll wake up and find the blanket covering my arms.

I love sleeping in hotels with the a/c full blast. I wish I could do that in my apt.

  44. Kage:

BL- yeah, you go to the clinic and the strap you with all kind of electrodes and stuff. They monitor you through a camera and equipment. If you stop breathing they will wake you and put on the mask. It was NOISY there. All those people snoring so loud. I really had a hard time sleeping.

  45. Coconut Willy:

The wife bought me one of those memory foam pillows. Took a little while to get used to, but now I like it. No more sore neck in the morning.

  46. Alex:

I didn't agree with Lance's blog regarding the "wrong way" accident in Waikiki the other day. I wrote him a letter and let him know how I felt he was wrong. You know what happened? He actually responded to me in a very well written e-mail further explaining his position. As a result, I see this side of the story more than I did when I read his blog. Thank you Lance for taking the time to respond to your readers. It not only shows your Aloha spirit, but that you have a lot of class! Real class. Who knew that the HA had such talent!

    I am a stomach/side sleeper

I've always wondered for those who sleep on their stomachs and sides..... are you more prone to drooling while you sleep?

When I used to drink a lot, I would sleep walk and do crazy things. I woke up butt naked on the couch many times, and once I redecorated our living room furniture while asleep.

    Rodney Lee:
I use a sobakara pillow. The crunchy noise doesn't bother me. On trips, I have to use 2 pilllows or one folded up pillow.

I wondah if rice would work da same? Yup, gotta have two pillows on trips.

My lower half is like a stomach sleeper, but my upper half is like a side sleeper...The arm that I'm lying on has to go under my pillow and extend out - usually towards the corner of the bed...My under leg is straight while my upper leg is bent. This is so our silky terrier can sleep between my calves and our pom-chi can tuck in behind my bent knee.

 For a minute there I thought you was describing yoga poses!

When you say I am 77, reminds me of the TV show The Prisoner. "I am not a number".

Yup, way before my time but maybe dat's how 007 came into play as they were both British right?

Since then I can not sleep without worrying about getting woken up each hour. Been like this for awhile.

Have you tried taking sleeping medications to try to sleep through da night?

  48. Scott:

@ Alex, #46, like you, after I cooled down and re read Lance's post, I too was reminded of how thoughtful and professional Lance is and that I'm really proud to know him as a friend.

  49. Alohikea:

BL, there can be instances of drool :)

  50. Ynaku:

My sleep habit. Lie down close da eyes and start snoring before ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

If hot, hemo da covers. If cold sleep under the covers. I was in the military and cause he didn't want to fix the bed tight enough to bounce a quarter on it, some slept on top. Since it was cold, I wouldn't pull out the blanket or sheets from the tucked in sides. I would slide between the sheets from the head side and be like a cocoon. Try not to move when sleeping then in da morning, slip back out and pull the sides tight tuck it between the springs and flip da quarter again. Maybe that's why I like my sheets tucked.
