Jonesing
By Braddah Lance
Da Wife mentioned we haven't gone out and eaten in awhile - a long while - to some of our favorites like Shillawon and Genki. During da holidays, it gets tough because of so much commitments, get togethers and shopping to do and we haven't gone out anywhere going on nearly two and a half months!
Save some kala I guess but it does get boring no?
We're not an every Friday night dine out kine of couple but I'd say maybe once or twice a month we head out for good meal.... plus, we kinda run out of ideas wat for cook.
Have you been "jonesing" for any real ono kine food lately? Have you neglected to visit your favorites in awhile? Wea you like go if you could go right now? Jonesing for anything specific?
I kinda feeling garlic chicken right now.........
SHOUT OUT: A recent Lurkah/Lanceformer turning Kwonic will be visiting Oahu next week and she asked for some tips on dining and things to do from da kama'aina point of view. I gave her a list but it'll surah be great if Da Hui can kokua on dis one. She get three keiki's too so budget is shmall kine factor. She staying North Shore so if anybody get any good places for grind up there that'll help but Town side too is good.
Mahalos to Da Hui!
Shoots! K-den.

Wassup Wit Dat!

Aloha BL,
That reminds me - I haven't gone to Assagio's or Gyukaku in a while. As for North Shore grinds gotta try Hukilau Cafe in Laie. They have larger portions little kids can probably split.

4 Kings (used to be Green Papaya) in Kaimuki has a killah vegetarian pho that I'm jonesing for. And their smart roll sushi is ono!
January 28th, 2010 at 9:25 am
This month I've gone to Genki and BLC for dinner. In both cases, I was surprised as how empty the places were. I guess this is a sign of how bad a recession we're in.
At Genki, we could just walk in and sit and the counter and start eating. No wait.
At BLC, on a Saturday night, one section of tables was completely unoccupied the entire time we were there.
If you have favorite restaurants, and are financially comfortable, now is the time to patronize them to help make sure they're still there next time you want to eat there (not to mention not having to wait for a table). When the economy picks up and they get crowded, that's the time to skip the eating out.

Jonesing (wea dat term come from?) fo some pinakbet from Mililani Golf Course restaurant. I called for some takeout a couple months back but aisoos, da filipino cook went home already.
January 28th, 2010 at 9:37 am
Laulau... at this point doesn't matter from where. I'm seriously considering spending the $70 bucks to have 2 of them shipped to me.
January 28th, 2010 at 9:43 am
Tamura's poke, chicken katsu and a Mickey Goon drink from Duke's while watching the sunset and listening to music on a Sunday afternoon after a good surf. Ok, I think I'm gonna cry now
January 28th, 2010 at 9:50 am
I got a Jones to be back on Da Rock! Hopefully I'll be back next week via the 9th island (unless I hit MegaBucks).
Seriously though, is Genki (sushi) really good? I often wondered. Looks kinda fun but I always was worried about the quality.

I am WAY overdue for some Sugoi's garlic chicken. Since they close before I can get there after work on the weekdays, I'm limited to Saturdays only. And since we've been going to events these past Saturday nights, I can't have it for lunch - garlic breath, you know
.
This Saturday is out as we'll be going to The Beat on Saturday night.
Maybe next Saturday. Oh wait, Powerhouse is playing at Haw'n Brians.
Maybe I can talk daughter #2 in picking up some on a weekday. LOL
January 28th, 2010 at 10:15 am
Something I've been jonesing for for a long time: Chicken Alice
January 28th, 2010 at 10:39 am
Oddly enough, I've been on this garlic chicken plate lunch phase for a few weeks. I am not a cannibal
.
You know, after the holidays, I found myself having Aloha Salads and Jamba Juice stuff for lunch and dinner, too [!]. All that eating during the holidays.
I think I want some butterfish now. GOOD butterfish (how come I haven't seen that as one of the specials at Zippy's for a while now?). I wouldn't mind having some maki sushi right now.
January 28th, 2010 at 10:43 am
I've been ono for different kine noodles (look fun is the best!) and beef broccoli for a while (I had some BB for lunch and it was terrible. Never going back THERE again). I alternate that with being ono for tamales. Different kine comfort foods. I was also ono for good waffles for a while, and luckily there's a new waffle joint right near my office.
What I'm REALLY ono for is mom's kombu maki, dad's steak, and gramma's namasu. Aswhyhahd.
January 28th, 2010 at 12:13 pm
I have been wanting some good fish. @CG - butterfish would be awesome.
I do not like to cook it at home because it stinks up the place. I have not gone out to eat anywhere recently that serves good fish.
January 28th, 2010 at 12:26 pm
Winnah winnah laulau dinnah!
....................................................
....................................................
I was going to suggest dat too and I completely forgot about it in my list to her. Now dat is a MUST stop but I heard da lines can/will get choke long.
...................................................
...................................................
Is there such a thing as a "dumb" roll sushi?
.................................................
.................................................
Really? Which Genki? Cause da one in Pearl City is always packed wen I drive by.... even on da weekdays. At Kuru Kuru there's ALWAYS a wait....
Wat's "BLC"?
Rogah dat.
..................................................
..................................................
Isn't dat a MLC term too?
And wat da heck is pinakbet??
.....................................................
.....................................................
Yowza! Now laulau is really something da mainland people wouldn't have regularly.
Do you have poke there?
..............................................
..............................................
.................................................
.................................................
Well if you hit da Megabucks I expect first class tickets in my mailbox.
*praying for Makiki to hit da MegaBucks*
Their spicy tuna made them "famous". I usually pound about 10 plates of those just to be satisfied but actually still wanting more. The quality is above average and da rice itself is tasty which I believe makes da sushi "toppings" taste bettah. There's a big fight for patrons between Kuru Kuru and Genki and right now I feel like Kuru Kuru has a very slight edge only cause their prices are lower and you get just about da same quality. I tink Kuru Kuru's rice is a notch below Genki's on flavah though but I like 'em both.
..................................................
..................................................
Eh, no fo'get me eh?
You pah-tay animal you!
Wat da heck is dat? Or is dat a person?
.....................................................
.....................................................
From wea?
I heard some good things about dat place.
Good butterfish and you like go Zippy's? Wassamattah you?
Da bestest butterfish I ate was in Japan though.... aftah dat, I rarely eat 'em locally - just not da same.
....................................................
....................................................
Wat looks fun?
Just teasing.
I love au' kines udon: fried, soup, yakisoba.
Been there done dat. I dunno why but such a "simple" dish, some places no can make 'em taste good yeah?
I was kinda disappointed I nevah get tamales wen I was in Seattle or Portland from some real Mexicans. Da burrito I had was ono from a Mexican.
....................................................
....................................................
Dat is so true - finding a good "fish" place is tough. Even good cut ahi poke is hard to find as now da poke places are using subpar cuts of da ahi. I used to remembah wen da poke I used to get was blood red and not "frozen or preserved with smoke and coloring". I tink besides going out to finer restaurants like Roys and getting opakapaka, a "regular" eatery with good fish is hard to come by.
I tink das why I normally NEVAH order fish outside of poke and sushi.
January 28th, 2010 at 12:39 pm
We went to Genki at Ward Center (and yes, Makiki, there's a reason why it's a surprise to walk in with no wait) . BLC is Breakfast, Lunch, & Crab.
Right now I ono for some spare ribs from Kaka'ako Kitchen. Almost as good as my mom's.
January 28th, 2010 at 12:43 pm
BL- pinakbet is Filipino vegetable stew. Bittermelon, eggplant, wingbean, longbean, shrimp, maybe pork, and tomatoe all in a fish base soup....ono on those chilly nights.
January 28th, 2010 at 12:47 pm
MMMMM.... tamales....
I gotta remember to get some when I am in CA in March. They sell it a the Mexican supermarket up the street from my sister's house. Hot and ready to eat. I froze some once and brought them home.
January 28th, 2010 at 12:47 pm
Howzit BL!
Jonesing for Hawaiian Food at Helena's or Ono Hawaiian Food.
January 28th, 2010 at 12:51 pm
BL, my SO agrees with you about the rice being better at Genki than at Kuru Kuru.
January 28th, 2010 at 1:38 pm
Now I'm Jonesing for sushi! Genki it will be then. Are they all the same or is one better than the others?
BL - When I hit MegaBucks I will send a courier over with the tickets!

Just gotta decide on a flavor now.... hmmmmm
Dang, I could go for a Sugoi's garlic chicken plate too now! I no care if I get garlic breath!
Just eat some parsley if you worried about da smell.
January 28th, 2010 at 2:36 pm
Hello Hello!
I'm not jonesing for anything right now. Is something wrong with me? My boss is having my belated birthday lunch delivered to the office tomorrow and my pick is CPK's Thai Crunch Salad. I can taste 'um now! yummmm!
The other night I wanted Menchies, but we were closer to Tropic Rush. Was a real let down. Okay, I guess I could be jonesing for Menchies.
January 28th, 2010 at 2:38 pm
Different eateries. Zips? All over.
I miss Jolly Roger's.
January 28th, 2010 at 3:06 pm
Maybe I should have brought Spicy Ahi to softball the other night.....Maybe next time we have early game.
Uncle Rodney-I would give my left foot for some Chicken Alice.
January 28th, 2010 at 3:09 pm
BF, thanks
Ice Shave
Tomato Beef
Mango Pickle (Oh man my mouth watering. All dat juice stay flowing)
Go cut short through da park for da Ice Shave truck. OH Blaines Drive Inn in Hilo get da kine Korean chicken (Thighs) with choke garlic. Yeah no breathe on me kind garlic strong. But buggah ono and stay on special. I think was like $5 something for full order and $4 for mini. 2 scoops rice, Mac salad and about 3 or 4 regulah Chicken thighs (Not cornish game hen size thighs
) Oh dat sounds good for Dinner but I think wife cooking something up.
January 28th, 2010 at 3:09 pm
It's both. Alice had a bar that made ono yobo fried chicken - like the kine spicy chicken wings and drumettes at the Korean eateries - but mo bettah!
Was so good that people told her she should open a restaurant just for her chicken - thus was born - Chicken Alice.
Used to be on Kapiolani Blvd across where Tower Video was (The Shoppe for us MLCers), next to Lightning Bolt Surfboards. Wasn't sit down kine restaurant, more like walk in drive in (make sense or what - walk in drive in).
But the place closed and no more Chicken Alice chicken.
Although I heard she went full circle and is now right back where she started - serving her famous chicken at a bar. You like go with me for do the "research"?
January 28th, 2010 at 3:11 pm
Oh BTW, You dunno what Pinakbet is? Aisus BL.. Some places call it Sari sari.

January 28th, 2010 at 3:46 pm
Uncle Rodney, I'm so there. She used to have a store in Peal Kai too in the food court where the 24 hour fitness is now.
January 28th, 2010 at 3:52 pm
I tink dat location actually kine of a bad location. Not too many local patrons go into dat part of Ward and if they do it's usually upstairs at Ryan's or to Borders. PC and Waikele is always packed.
Uh, duh!
I knew those initials looked familiar.
Spare ribs too I tink is an art for those who can spend da time and make 'em onolicious!
....................................................
....................................................
For a minute there it kinda sounded like a menudo!
They actually have a "Mexican" supahmarket? I've seen Samoan, Korean and Japanese. I wondah wat kine hot sauce they carry?
....................................................
....................................................
Now dat you mention it.... kalua pig wit cabbage and tobasco sounds good right about now.
....................................................
....................................................
....................................................
....................................................
All da same... from da sounds of it, go to Ward if you don't want to wait long for a table cause at da Pearl City and Waikele ones we wait on average about 30-40 minutes.
...................................................
...................................................
Feel free to bring me da leftovahs.
..................................................
..................................................
No mattah hot or cold.... ALWAYS can do shave ice.
See, now DAT's da hardest part.
Really? Parsley?
..................................................
..................................................
Happy Belated Hau'oli La Hanau sally!
Even moreso now huh?
...................................................
...................................................
Now dat's a blast from da past! I used to love their orange whip!
..................................................
..................................................
Spicy ahi, kim chee and beea....... I feel a kanack coming on.
..................................................
..................................................
I still gotta check dat place out.
....................................................
....................................................
Ooooh.
Count me in.... I'll order in Korean.
...................................................
...................................................
My Filipino food palette stops at lumpia.
...................................................
...................................................
Should we wear our lab coats too?
...................................................
...................................................
Game on!
January 28th, 2010 at 4:55 pm
BL, since when could bring beeah to PC Genki again?
Before, I used to do that all the time--small cooler with 2 or 3 beers, and have the other half drive home. Then they started selling beeah, and I had to stop.
Did they give up/lose their liquor license?
