Work Weight

Scales suck.

It's probably da one item in your enitre home dat you have THE most truest love/hate relationship with and no mattah how good - or bad - da numbahs show up, you can nevah deny wat it tells (shows) you.

Da Baby wandered into our bathroom looking for Mommy as she was showering and ended up near da scale. I picked her up and plopped her on it curious to see wat she weighed in at.

21 pounds.

Really? I have biceps dat say oddahwise.

Hmmm. I haven't weighed myself in months. Should I or shouldn't I? It can't be dat bad right?

Boy was I wrong.... BIG TIME!

Figuratively and literally.

A shade under an Oompa-loompa buck seventy-five.

WOW! Really? Is da scale broken? Damn you digital scale!

Dat got me tinking and concluding an unscientifically proven theory dat if you work... you'll gain weight. I have nearly 12 years of real life data to prove it.

At my first accounting job, I was a young bud surrounded by an office full of "moms". Naturally, I was fed quite often and always been the "Mikey". You know da tag line, "give it to Mikey, he'll eat anything". I put on a few pounds but thank goodness I had various outlets - and time - to keep it in check. Actually I put on good weight cause I used to lift nearly everyday and I like to think I put on more muscle than fat.

Same went on at my second accounting job but I got to surf nearly everyday and on the days I didn't, I lifted weights. I kept my weight in check - hovering right around an athletic 168 - and was still active outside of work.

Then being unemployed for nearly 15 months my activity level dropped and da weight melted like buttah. I would have thought I'd pack on the pounds since I wasn't doing anything and sleeping more than usual but it was da opposite. I actually was hovering above and below the 160 mark which surprised Da Wife as well.

Now back to work and in only four months, WHOA!, 15 pounds jus' li'dat!

I don't eat more - I actually eat less - and I rarely even hit up the office snack stockpile. I am waaaaay less active but yet I grew like Santa Claus.

Wassup Wit Dat!

Does dat mean I shouldn't be working or does dat mean I need to find a job dat has a gym or beach nearby? Have you noticed any weight gains from work ovah da past yea or months even? If you're office bound, do you think dat actually slows down your metabolism?

I can't explain it oddah than being more makule but my theory has got some merit, doesn't it? Da only difference is dat now I can prove it.... but no ask for proof, it ain't pretty.

Read a report that Americans have and use less vacation time than Europeans. Another set of reports indicate Americans are some of the fattest people around (a pun!).

Sure looks like work equals fat!

  2. GA Bows:

While you're at work, I'm assuming you sit at your desk majority of the day....

If that's the case, you're not burning any calories. While you were at home with the keiki, granted there was napy time... you probably was moving around or doign some kind of activity with the baby.

Did that make any kine of sense?

  3. M:

    Howzit BL!
I loss at least 25lbs. since I started SUPing.

  4. hemajang:

eh BL, I agree w/GA Bows, calories coming in but not burning enough. Need mo exercise. Plus...you getting old and body not as efficient. I would find an activity that will get your cardio up for extended periods of time, plenty sweat. I think guys who bulk up from lifting can easily get flabby if they stop exercising. I also work on my butt all day...hmm, nevah sound so good, I mean my job has me sitting for most of the day and at my advance age, I gotta exercise aftah work.

  5. Ynaku:

When I started this job, I was a slim 135. FO REALZ TRUST ME  But then, the crew I worked with used to eat breakfast, lunch, pupu, beea, AND Dinna. I had no choice cause I was stuck working with them away from home. Next thing I knew, BAM! 30 lbs added within 9 months. I felt pregnant.

So what we did was after work, we headed for the water and went diving, walking (roller skate) stuff like that. Good thing I was still young and could burn off a lot of the calories.

Eventually, my boss kept me in the office and being I was older, it was harder to stop the weight from increasing. Ate salads and sandwiches (not da footlongs) but still.

Now I'm glad I get to work out in the field. Watching what I eat, and started losing. I like lose plenty more but I know going take a while.

  6. Ynaku:

A while to lose the weight :D

  7. Kage:

    @Ynaku - 135??? hmmmm, okay, I tink I trust you. :)

I go through times when all I want to eat is junk food. Then the same for healthier fare, salads, vegies, etc. I have to learn to watch the calorie intake. I already pay attention to the fat and carbs.

  8. KAN:

Sitting at a desk during your work day is almost garans way to gain weight. I've had a desk job for 20 years. Good thing I'm gasagasa - that helps to burn a few calories.

One thing I've noticed is when I'm on vacation (and getting enough sleep), I usually lose weight, even if I'm eating like a pig (esp. when I'm back visiting my folks). Also, I move around more when I'm on vacation & my stress level goes down, so that helps too.

  9. carokun:

i agree, it's work weight. i gained a bunch working here after being laid off. but last month they had a promotion to check out the fitness center here at work for free. so i've been going and i'm going to try a kettlebell class today. yesterday was yoga. hopefully the weight will melt off like buttah, but i doubt it. :)

  10. M:

My wife turned to a vegan diet last April because of health issues and loss over 40 lbs. and is healthier too.

  11. snow:

that's it... it's work weight! well, maybe for you, but not for me or a whole lot of other people. i figure that while you were at home, you're probably keeping busy most of the time, especially since baby was a newborn... changing diapers, washing clothes, walking to the grocery store... even though you think all you did was sleep. but, getting adequate sleep actually helps you lose weight... you probably weren't getting enough before that. the only time i lose weight while staying home is when i'm sick and can't eat. lol.

  12. rayboyjr:

    Good Morning Everyone!!!

... hey Braddah Lance ... aww, scales are our friends ... think about it ... it we didn't have scales, I think we'd actually put on more weight ... scales help keep our weight in check ... even if you never step on it to check ... just the sight of the scale makes you think about your weight ...

... anyway, maybe you lowered your metabolism when you were home with baby ... so no matter how much or little you eat ... your body still tries to store it as fat ...

... just one of those thing with getting older ... our bodies don't react the way it used to ... *sigh*

    ... Have a Good One Everyone!!! ...

  13. zzzzzz:

BL, I suggest you get a big water bottle. Fill it up when you get to the office in the morning, drink from it all day, refilling as soon as you empty it. Whenever you fill/refill or return the water you borrowed, go to the furthest fountain or restroom in your building.

  14. Ynaku:

Kage, I get pics to prove it  Now I consider myself, Pleasantly Plump :D

I don't dispute it. We've grown into a culture dat loves to eat.

I was smiling the whole time I was reading todays blog. Your new job is so busy, you probably just stay at your desk and jam,. You don't walk around and make a conscious effort to move around. That'll do it! Add on getting older and having a baby...pau. :-)

My daughter looks at my skinny pictures and makes comments, and I tell her, ” well, before I had a BABY, I used to go to the gym at least five days a week for at least two hours!”

No worry; when the baby is older (middle school), you'll have more time. Enjoy the baby with your big body. ;-)

  17. carokun:

Lol. Yup, my torso was sore by the time I got back to my desk. too many torso twists. :) happy hump day!
